Tribute to a Maestro : Variations on a theme by Jean-Philippe Rameau

Tribute to a Maestro is an homage to Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683–1764), one of the most important French Baroque composers. Rameau was a hugely significant composer, organist, harpsichordist and music teacher: he also published several authoritative books on music theory. Jan de Haan based this tribute on a theme from ‘Les Sauvages’ (The Savages), the fourth act of Rameau’s ballet-opera, Les Indes Galantes (The Amorous Indies). The work begins with two variations, whereupon the striking theme can be heard. After a short intermezzo, four more variations follow, of which the last one is composed in Baroque style. A Sevenoaks Suite was commissioned by the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Concert Band from Kent in the south-east of England. The suite describes 3 famous landmarks in the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge area: ‘Knole Park’, situated to the south-east of Sevenoaks. ‘The Chapel - Tonbridge School’: This movement centres around a hymn-like chorale, depicting the years of worship that have taken place within the chapel, and ‘The Vine Bandstand’ suggesting the type of music often played in bandstands. Today, Voestalpine is a company specialising in technology and industrial goods. Founded nearly 150 years ago, it has played an important role in the steel and iron industry throughout its history. The company displays an impressive “Contemporary History Exhibition 1938-1945” commemorating the victims of National Socialist forced labour in the factory during WWII. ‘Iron Ring’ refers to the company logo during that time. This work is a symphonic poem-like composition, describing different aspects of the companies’ history in four musical scenes. It is a dramatic, breathtaking and impressive piece of music that will leave no one untouched. The piece features severalimpressive solos for a cello. Some few months after returning to Naples from Rome, where he had gone to follow the premiere of L’Olimpiade at the Teatro Tordinona during the 1735 carnival season, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi –– notwithstanding the quickened pace of the disease that would soon bring his brief life to a close — presented the public with a new work, Il Flaminio, a “commedeja pe’ mmuseca” set to a libretto by Gennarantonio Federico. The opera was staged as the second of season that fall at the Teatro Nuovo sopra Toledo (one of three traditional venues, together with the Teatro dei Fiorentini and the Teatro della Pace, dedicated to the production of opere bu e), where it met with a generally favorable reception. The edition is based basically on the Pergolesi’s autograph full score, for the third act, (kept in Naple, Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella Library) and on a complete manuscript full score copy today in the Abbazia di Montecassino Library. The critical edition is in two volumes and includes a historical Introduction, a detailed description of all the sources considered and a Commentary with critical notes and information related to specific problems of performance practice. There is also the facsimile reproduction of the printed libretto.

Field Mass H 279 : The Spectre's Bride H 214 I A

The present volume of the Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition (BMCE) contains two vocal-instrumental works. The “Field Mass” (1939) with a text by Jirí Mucha incorporating bible and liturgy quotes was created in reaction to the outbreak of the Second World War and intended for outdoor performances. The cantata “The Spectre’s Bride” with a text by Karel Jaromír Erben was composed in 1932 as part of the ballet “Špalícek” (meaning “chapbook”): the composer later took out the cantata, making it into a stand-alone concert piece.The autograph scores served as primary sources for both works. The edition of the “Field Mass” (including its performance materials) also contains theoriginal version of the ending with a quote from the Czech medieval hymn “Jezu Kriste, štedry kneže” (“Jesu Christ, bountiful priest”) and a number of contemporary translations.

Extreme Make-Over was inspired by a theme from the second movement of Tchaikovsky?s String Quartet No.1 (Andante Cantabile). It consists of a number of musical metamorphoses on the theme and includes several excerpts from Tchaikovsky?s Fourth and Sixth Symphonies and Romeo and Juliet. The most unconventional element of the work is instrumentation for ten tuned bottles to be played by members of the cornet section. This gives the piece an Indonesian Gamelan effect.
