Aquarium

Aquarium

The Suite "Aquarium" is Johan de Meij's third composition for symphonic band and features six tropical fishes, each of them represented by a motif, and surfacing as such in several guises. The composition consists of three movements of which the second and third merge uninterruptedly into each other. I) Allegretto grazioso (Neon Tetra, Electric Eel and Angelfish) II) Andante / Adagio (Sea Horse and Zebrafish) III) Finale: Allegro giocoso (Guppy & Co.) The Neon Tetra motif functions as a kind of 'Leitmotiv' and descibes the beautifully coloured, frisky fish: A number of variants have been derived from this theme and will also appear in the other movements. The Electric Eelin fact is not represented by a motif, but by a rhythm based on the restless electric pulses made audible in some aquaria. The Angel fish is represented by elegant cluster chords. In the second movement the Sea Horse emerges out of the water vegetation and starts a dialogue with the Zebrafish, which is represented by one melodic phrase in unison, getting more and more threatening by added parallel fifths and octaves. Simultaneously with the Sea Horse motif the Neon Tetra theme emerges, this time in 3/4 time and in Eb minor. The third movement starts with only two instruments (trumpet and xylophone), but as it is often the case with Guppies their number rapidly increases. Piccolo and Alto Saxophone introduce the Guppy Theme followed by several instrumental combinations. Every theme from the first movement 'swims by' once more, after which the principal motif leads us to a brilliant ending.

Madurodam

Madurodam

Madurodam is a small scale miniature town at Scheveningen (near The Hague) and is since many years one of the most important tourist attractions of the conurbation of Western Holland (called "Randstad"). On a scale 1:25 a charming picture of The Netherlands is given in bird's eye view: several important buildings, churches and townscapes are reconstructed up to the smallest details. There is also a fine transport system: a network of railroads, harbours and motorways covers the park and Madurodam Airport enables air traffic with all continents. The miniature suite Madurodam consists of eight short parts presenting a musical impression of the smallest town in The Netherlands. IReveille the piccolo flute and the side drum announce a new day; II Toy Soldiers there is a military parade in front of the George Maduro Barracks; III Binnenhof/Buitenhof a solemn melody is the main theme of the suite and depicts the state buildings and the nearby lake "Hofvijver" at The Hague; IV Small Windmills everything that moves or whirls at Madurodam is described in this barrel organ waltz; V Intermezzo/Nocturne Madurodam by night is described by a solemn passage played in unison by the lower instruments; VI The Westerkerk Church also the capital Amsterdam is represented with the chimes of the famous Westerkerk church; VII The Muiderslot Castle an elegant pavane recalls medieval atmospheres; VIII "Grande" Finale the windmill theme comes back and then the suite comes to an end with the "Binnenhof" theme, decorated by the first strains of the national hymn "Wilhelmus".

Naturals for 'safety'.Programme NotesIn this day and age, when faced with the challenge of writing a 'Piano Concerto', e.g. a piece for symphony orchestra and an all-dominating and virtuosic solo Piano part, one has two options: either: DO, or do NOT go for it wholesale, exploiting and enjoying the conrnucopia of sonorous treasures offered by the combination of the orchestra and the 'Grand Piano'. I have opted to go for it. When writing for one of our great young international Piano stars, it would be absurd, and a waste, to do anything less and only 'nibble at the goodies'.However, the piece is not a big, clunky 'machine'. Rather it is a transparently orchestrated neo-classic (for the lack of a better work) composition in three movements, lastign approximately 25 minutes. The piece begins with a moderately paced opening, in which the Piano gradually gathers momentum and strength, beginning with the most gentle of motifs. In this movement the soloist and orchestra fo not always agree, and the vigilant listener will observe the disparity between the two. Following a swift, up-beat coda, the movement stops, almost in mid-breath, on one of the gentle Piano chords taken from the very opening. The extreme simplicity of the second movement, 'Semplice' (the opening Piano solo bears the marking: 'slightly hesitant - like a child practicing') is, after having been joined by the Vibraphone, Harp and solo Violin, suddenly violated with unprecedented brutality by the rest of the orchestra, which virtually 'lies in wait - panting to pounce'. But eventually calm and order is restored. The finale is a crazy rondo of sorts. The marking 'Avanti Risoluto' (Forward with Resolve) is a bit of an understatement. It is a full throttle, no hold barred ride - and hopefully lots of fun for everybody.         - Poul Ruders, February 2010
