Il Briccone

A wind music federation from Upper Austria commissioned Thomas Doss to compose Il Briccone, the Italian word for scoundrel. It is an elegant concert march which combines light ironic elements with virtuosity and exciting rhythms. Its alternation between chamber music-like passages with figures from solo instruments combined with surprising stylistic changes keeps everybody’s interest. This march is sure to be a great crowd pleaser.

Il Giudizio Universale : Poema sinfonico

Camillo De Nardis’ Il giudizio universale (The Universal Judgement) was awarded first prize at the Competition for Band Composition held in Naples. This composition was inspired by Verdi’s Requiem with its melodramatic style, sudden changes of atmosphere and imposing moments of fortissimo.

Il Presidente : Marche comique

Il Presidente is a humorous march depicting a president’s appearance before his people! The president’s convoy is accompanied by a grand fanfare as he pulls up in his car. The people cheer and wave as the president starts to deliver his speech. Slowly their mood begins to shift and they become restless. Finally bored, the people begin to drift away. The finale accompanies people as they return to the city in search of more interesting ways in which to spend their time. An amusing tongue-in-cheek piece that will add a little joy to any concert!

Opera in three acts, edited by Alan Curtis. This opera was first performed in Venice in 1666. It may with justice be considered to be the finest opera written between Monteverdi's 'Poppea' and the dramatic works of the mature Purcell. Having in 1983 presided over the first modern revival of 'Il Tito' in Innsbruck, the city of its original commissioning, Alan Curtis has now produced the first complete performing edition to be drawn from available sources.

Per Nørgård: Piano Concerto - Concerto In Due Tempi

Per Nørgård PIANO CONCERTO 'Concerto in due Tempi' was composed 1994-95 and dedicated to Per Salo, the pianist who also gave the world premiere on May 5, 1996 with the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leif Segerstam.The work has a duration of appr. 30 minutes. It unfolds itself as an uninterrupted interplay between the piano and the orchestral instruments, often in soloistic or chamber music combinations. An alto saxophone separates itself from the rest of the instruments, but contributes in a dramatic way to the ensemble playing, as a kind of ?anti-soloist?. ?Due tempi? does not refer to the number of movements, of which there is only one. This movement, however, invites a three-part interpretation (downwards, solo cadenza in the bass register, upwards!). The ?two tempi? in fact exist simultaneously and are in the ratio 7:5 (approximately the square root of two).Per Nørgård

Between - Cello Concerto No. 1 - 3 movements for Violoncello and Orchestra, composed by Per Nørgård in 1984-85. Premiered by Frances-Marie Uitti and the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Schönwandt, August 30th 1985. Programme note: 1. In Between 2. Turning point 3. Among The title of each movement suggests one aspect of the relationship between soloist and orchestra. In the first movement the solist is caught up in a conflict between the expression of inner feelings (solo) and influences from external sources (orchestra), the latter of which the soloist in a simple accompanying role, but after a turning point in the middle of the movement the soloist assumes a dominating role. In the final movement a balance is finally achieved, with the soloist at last being on equal terms with the orchestra. Per Nørgård

Verso il Sole : A Tribute to the Sun

Since the beginning of mankind people have realized that the warmth and the light of the sun were necessary to develop life on earth - by creating winds in the air, by generating rains through the evaporation of sea water and by allowing plants to grow. The sun creates the dynamism of the chain of life. This is the reason why ancient populations adored the sun as the god of cosmic order as opposed to the god of chaos or night, who generated fear and the necessity of defense. This piece is a tribute to the sun (Verso il Sole) as an existential symbol of life and energy.

Based on a story by Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen), who also wrote Out of Africa, the inspiration for the 1985 Academy Award winning film. Babette's Feast tells the story of Babette Hertsard (Stéphane Audran), a 19th century Parisian political refugee who flees on a boat to Frederikshavn in Denmark with the help of her nephew, and her relationship with two elderly and religious sisters. The sisters Martina (named for Martin Luther) and Philippa (named for Luther's friend and biographer Philip Melanchthon) were the daughters of a pastor who had founded his own religious sect.

Feste Romane : Poema Sinfonico per Orchestra

Ottorino Respighi was one of the most well known Italian composersfrom the beginning of the twentieth century. His style is influencedby the French impressionists, Rimsky-Korsakov and Richard Strauss,but with his very own touch. Respighi’s fame is mostly based on hisinstrumental works, especially the orchestral triptych of symphonicpoems, which included Feste Romane. This skilful adaptation forconcert band retains all the excitement of the original.
