Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da is a song by The Beatles from their 1968 album The Beatles (often called the ‘White Album’). Although credited to Lennon McCartney, the song was written solely by Paul McCartney. The tag line “ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goeson, brah” was an expression used by Nigerian conga player Jimmy Scott-Emuakpor, an acquaintance of McCartney. Eventually, through four acts full of complicated intrigue, he is outwitted. In his music, Mozart, at times in a humorous way, reflects the numerous social and erotic intrigues with both empathy and insight. The brilliant overture is just as vivacious and witty as the opera itself. Mozart delightfully anticipates the passion and playful love that is to come. The skillful transcription for concert band by the Japanese composer Tohru Takahashi certainly does justice to this enchanting music.

The Red Tower : Based on the painting by Giorgio de Chirico (1888-

The 2nd movement of The Venetian Collection refers to a painting by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was commissioned by the Banda Civica di Soncino [Italy]. One of the main towers of the ancient walls that surround themedieval town of Soncino, La rocca sforzesca, has a significant resemblance with the tower on De Chirico's painting. De Meij has constructed an exciting and warm-blooded work, based on a simple four-note motif, with lyric solopassages for bassoon, bass clarinet and soprano saxophone in the middle section. In November of 2000, THE RED TOWER was awarded 1st Prize in the International Composition Competition of OMAN. (Duration 8:30)

The Barber of Seville is based on the first of Beaumarchais‘ (1732- 1799) two sequential plays, The Marriage of Figaro being the second, although unusually the overture does not contain any themes from the ensuing opera. The music, however, is sparkling and tuneful encompassing the ‘spirit‘ of the story that is about to unfold. The overture follows the form of the classic Italian style, with a slow introduction followed by a brilliant Allegro. Of course, the famous crescendo, so typical of Rossini’s works, is also present.
