In the composer?s own words, ?Keep in Touch is a lament, a sort of chaconne divided up into sections by more freely-composed cadenzas for the Viola.? The electronic CD supplied with the sheet music includes bluesy singing from Antony Hegarty among other sounds, and Muhly clearly relishes the ?inbetweenness? of the singing and the falsetto of the Viola. Muhly?s music in this piece plays freely with time and key in a postmodernist way, making the ultimate solitude of the Viola touching.Contemporary American composer Nico Muhly is a prolific writer and arranger who, at 32, is the youngest composer ever to have been commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Nico Muhly: Three Songs (For Tenor, Violin And Drone)

Three Songs was expertly composed by Nico Muhly . There is a two-note drone that sounds throughout this piece?s 15-minute duration. In the first part of the songs, the Tenor and the Violin exchange lyrical and declamatory statements. The second part is a song without words: a sort of dance for solo Violin. The third part has the Violin intoning a pair of notes while the tenor sings, in essence, a list. The work was commissioned by violinist Tatiana Berman on French surrealist poems of her choosing, and was premiered at the Constella Festival in Cincinnati in 2012.

Lord Heare My Prayer Instantly is a composition by renowned contemporary composer Nico Muhly that was first performed on the 13th of December 2014 in the All Souls Episcopal Parish Church in Berkeley, California. The piece lasts around 4 minutes and is arranged for unaccompanied SATB divisi chorus. This beautiful piece is a setting of an anonymous metrical version of Psalm 102:1-2, in which the speaker begs God to listen and hear his pleas. This work was first performed by The International Orange Chorus of San Francisco, conducted by Zane Fiala, in honour of their tenth anniversary.

Nico Muhly: Radiant Music

Radiant Music was written for flautist Alice K. Dade at her request for a short recital piece. The tape part is made up of several episodes of shimmering music for flutes, dulcimers organs, and sampled baroque strings, trumpet, and choir. This piece attempts obsess over a repeated sequence of chords – this progression appears in the opening bars of the piece. This sequence reappears in each episode as a harmonic goal for the flute, whose part circumnavigates it but never hits it exactly. Also at play in Radiant Music is a notion of fast music that moves slowly versus slow music that moves quickly. This is most evident in the Throbbing music which is very fast, but has an immensely slow harmonic motion, and in the conclusion, which is made of one chord reworked over a long stretch of time. Radiant Music is dedicated to Alice K. Dade, with thanks to Alex Sopp, who edited the part in 2007.

Nico Muhly: Duet No.1 - Chorale Pointing Downwards

Duet No.1: Chorale Pointing Downwards is a work by contemporary composer Nico Muhly for Viola and Cello. The piece received its premiere at the Tenri Cultural Institute in New York in February 2004. Muhly  himself writes of the work that it's the first in a series of short string pieces that serve simultaneous purposes as harmonic and technical studies for both composer and performers. Duet No.1  is constructed around a cycle of fourteen chords repeated almost without cessation. This drone-like cycle is subject to a few rhythmic alterations, as well as two interruptions, keeping things dynamic and exciting. The middle of the piece becomes, in Muhly 's words, "a sort of fervent perpetual-motion perseverance", in an attempt to combine harmonic beauty with what sounds like a musical exercise.

Object Songs by composer Nico Muhly is a collection of six distinct pieces that were written in collaboration with illustrator and author Maira Kalman. Composed in 2014, the piece was commissioned by New York's Cooper Hewitt Design Museum and is arranged for Soprano Voice, Clarinet, Trumpet, Violin and Viola. This item contains the Full Score and Parts . Object Songs is a unique work, originally performed in the Music Room in the Cooper Hewitt Museum. It was composed as a response to the room within the Museum that Maira Kalman created, and the objects chosen to be displayed within them. Object Songs certainly isn't like any piece you'll have ever performed before, featuring the sound of a ticking watch that fades in and out, inspired by Abraham Lincoln's pocket watch, which was made to tick again in 2014. From here, you will hear the six songs move through various themes including spoons, soup and even gibberish lyrics.  Inspired by our natural affection for objects and how they affect our memories, Object Songs is a unique composition unlike any you'll have performed before.

Nico Muhly: Diacritical Marks (Score/Parts)

Diacritical Marks was written for the Chiara Quartet in 2011, and is in eight short movements. I have a huge anxiety about string quartets; they are normally meant to be giant expressions of a composer?s emotional life. Here, I focused on details: a tiny dot above a letter, a tiny swivel of the bow. The first and last movements are energetic and driving, and the middle movements are more lyrical, rhapsodic, and/or floating. The quartet is bound together by a piece of drone music, found in movements 3, 5, and 7, in which the second violin and the viola play an interlocking repeating pattern ad infinitum, while the cello and first violin spin very long, outrageous lines on top. Nico Muhly: Tvísöngur

Tvísöngur is a composition for large ensemble, written by Nico Muhly , commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Tvísöngur is a specific type of Icelandic two-part singing that can be found in texts as well as oral traditions, Muhly  writes. Some of the tradition seems, like much early music, to stem from an exercise in voice-leading, while some other examples are more social, impromptu, and secular. These arrangements attempt to frame the tradition through orchestration and wildly shifting contexts, lighting effects and textures. The piece was composed in 2012 and lasts around 5 Minutes.
