The Angel in the Forest : Set of 6 Cello Parts, Kolmar

The Angel in the Forest' was premiered in St James’s Church, Piccadilly in January 2010 by James Gilchrist (tenor), a cello sextet led by Sophie Harris and the Schoolhouse 6 Ensemble, conducted by Ian Belton.

In Paradisum

Using text from the traditional Latin liturgy of the Western Church Requiem Mass. For SATB choir and string orchestra. First performed on 26 November 2022 at Younger Hall, St Andrews by St Andrews Chorus, conducted by Michael Downes. Full Score and Parts are available on hire from the publisher.

This six-minute anthem by Matthew Martin was commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Westminster for a service held on 15th October 2019 to mark the 750th anniversary of the dedication of the Abbey Church of Henry III and firstperformed by the Choir of Westminster Abbey conducted by James O’Donnell with Peter Holder (organ). The piece sets Latin and English text the Angularis fundamentum (Christ is the sure foundation) (Anon 7th century), translatedby. John Mason Neale (1818 1866) / Joseph Armitage Robinson (1858 1933), Dean of Westminster 1902 11. The work is scored for mixed choir with divisi, and the organ part is typical of Martin’s inimitable style.

Written in four contrasting movements, this work was premiered in early February 2019 in Hämeenlinna, Finland. The performers were Elina Vähälä (the dedicatee) and Paavali Jumppanen.

Nunc Dimittis

A setting of the Nunc Dimmitis in Latin for SSAATTBB choir a cappella. Although written for Richard Terry in 1915, the first concert peformance of this work was given in June 1974. Desmond Ratcliffe has prepared a keyboardreduction for rehearsal purposes only.

On Wings of the Dawn

Commissioned by Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan for its 75th Anniversary. First performed on 20 November 2022 at Kirk in the Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA. Text from Psalm 139: 9-10 and Lamentations 3: 22-23. A Tale of Old Japan

This cantata, one of Coleridge-Taylor’s final works written in 1911, sets the oriental poems of his good friend Alfred Noyes. The work was premiered in 1911 conducted by Arthur Fagge.

O Beata Trinitas

Commissioned by the Church in Wales to celebrate its centenary in 2020 and first performed on 18 September 2020 as a digital premiere by VOCES8 at the North Wales International Music Festival.

Three Études

For solo piano. The first of these Études was written in memory of Mark Ray, former Head of Keyboard Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), who died in tragic circumstances in 2006. It makes use of syncopatedrhythms and percussive articulation, with a passing reference to Ravel’s G major concerto, the work he performed in concert when he was a student at the RNCM. The Étude was premiered by Peter Lawson in 2006. Études 2 and 3 wereadded to complete the set in 2020. Étude 2 is dedicated to Murray McLachlan, and is a study in textural control, with ‘a quiet wistfulness, floating with reflection calmly over gentle quaver figurations’. Étude 3 is dedicated toJonathan Scott, and has more than a hint of the motoric rhythms and folk melodies of Bartok. It is ‘an extremely energised essay that encourages virtuosic bravura and élan’ (McLachlan).
