Martin Dalby: El Remanso Del Pitido (Vocal Score)

El remanso del pitido has been commissioned by the London Sinfonietta for the London Sinfonietta Chorus who give the first performance this evening.It is a work of nostalgia, a lament for the decline of steam engines - the stillness of the whistle. Based mainly on a poem by the Spanish writer, Gregorio Corral.The setting is for twelve voices, eight of them singing through close microphones. The work is fourth in a series of pieces derived from 13th Century homophonic Spanish cantigas and canciones. The final series of works will form a sort of song-book, the composer's own accounts of early Spanish music. The idea of a song-book is contained in the title of the first work of the series, Cancionero para una mariposa.

The contrast of the two melodies which Elgar then intertwines yield a satisfying short work, especially with the composer’s fine Orchestration.Elgar published the Chanson de Nuit – and its partner, Chanson de Matin – at the time of his life when he was also creating the Enigma Variations and The Dream of Gerontius. This work was originally created as a Violin and Piano duet, but Elgar then Orchestrated the work and it was presented at the Proms. Since then, other arrangements have been created.

Herbert Howells: Rhapsody IV And Prelude De Profundis for Organ

The Prelude de Profundis is excerpted from two sets of Preludes Howells composed for Organ, of which this is the first of the second set. Entirely different in mood from the nervous energy of the Rhapsody, Prelude de Profundis expresses the call ‘from the depths’.Herbert Howells is a giant of 20th century Anglican church music, the remainder of whose oeuvre is in the process of gaining new appreciation.He left a body of distinguished Organ music, of which these two works are fine examples. Howells’s first three rhapsodies for Organ were published together during the years of the first World War. It was not until forty years later that Howells returned to the form until, although it shares many structural similarities with the earlier works.
