Variations and Fugue On A Christmas Carol

This score is based on the old British Carol "I saw three ships." There are seven variations preceding the fugue. After the theme has been stated, the first two variations extend the theme: the third variation introduces the pedals. The next three variations are in the style of Baroque genres: the fourth variation is a noël written as an homage to Daquin: the fifth variation is a figured chorale, in which the chorale Von Himmel hoch, da komm ich her makes its first appearance: and the sixth is a Handelian rigaudon. The seventh variation is a “carillion” in which Von Himmel hoch reappears. After a dramatic, dissonant chord, the score concludes with a chorale fugue during whichVon Himmel hoch appears in the pedal. Like a Mighty Wind

The ballad-like melody and sweeping text give this anthem a timeless quality, though both elements are brand new. The SATB writing occurs only in spots, the rest is unison and two-part writing. Suitable for Pentecost or general use, there are optional parts for violin and cello. Duration: 3:30

Let Us Go Rejoicing : Fanfare, Introit, and Procession for the Dedication of a Church

Peter Latona's setting of the Entrance Antiphon for the Dedication of a Church is a perfect balance of solemnity and festivity. It opens with a brass and organ fanfare (echoed later by organ alone) and a chant-like choral section. Then the antiphon unfolds—easily sung by the assembly, while the verses offer some "meat" for SATB choir. Brass Quintet is used well throughout, supporting the antiphons and decorating the verses. Appropriate also for church anniversaries, the Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran, Christ the King C, or other festive liturgies. The musical setting is new, but hearkens back to early American shape-note singing.
