This work is based on the life and work of painter Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) who was also a sculptor, inventor, philosopher and researcher. Who doesn’t know his famous ‘Mona Lisa’ or ‘The Last Supper’? The composer used da Vinci’s note books (also known as codices) as a source of inspiration and the work follows the artist’s career programmatically. This is an incredible piece of music in which you almost can touch the artist and sense his urge for innovation and passion, making him one of the most important and interesting influencers of the 16th century.Leonardo by Otto M. Schwarz is an 11-minute work for Concert Band based on the life and work of Leonardo da Vinci.Born in Italy in 1452, da Vinci was a polymath of the Renaissance period whose interests included astronomy, philosophy, science and mathematics as well as the visual arts. He is considered one of the greatest painters of all time - who does not know of his famous ‘Mona Lisa’ or ‘The Last Supper’?Inspired by da Vinci's notebooks, or codices, this composition takes the listener on a journey through the artist's incredible career. Through his music, Schwarz brings da Vinci back to life. On September 19th, 1991 a mummified corpse of a man was found at the Similaun glacier in the Ötztäler Alps. The glacier unveiled an early man after 5,300 years, with all his personal belongings. His clothes and weapons were fairly well preserved and today allow us a deeper insight into that period. Austrian nature filmmaker Kurt Mündel reconstructed the life of this man and made a film which, based on facts, shows how it might have been then. Otto M. Schwarz used this documentary as an opportunity to write a work for symphonic wind band and musically resurrect the “Man in the Ice.”
