The piece opens with a plaintive Irish style flute solo,then moves seamlessly to the fast-paced section loosely based around the Appalachian fiddle tune “Glory in the Meeting House” introduced by the bodhran (Irish frame drum). From the opening raindrops and first few notes upon which the piece is built, this fast-paced and engaging work takes us through a series of variations that depict cascading waterfalls, flowing rivers, crashing waves, trickling creeks, and ripples over the surface of a calm lake. Translated from Gaelic as “Eternal September,” this marvelous setting for band is designed to take each listener back to their own vivid fall memories on a college campus. Commissioned by the University of Notre Dameand premiered at their Carnegie Hall performance in 2010, this work is also dedicated to the composer's father, Dr. Samuel J. Hazo, a 1949 graduate of Notre Dame. Additionally, Dr. Hazo's poem “Home Are the Sailors”is incorporated in the middle of the piece. Undercurrents provides an electrifying, virtuosic showcase for the whole ensemble - featuring a series of solos, duets and trios, as well as highlighting the various chamber sections within the band. The music was inspired by watching schools of fish and flocks of birds perpetually moving with the ocean currents and air currents.
