The 'Sonata d'arpeggione' was originally written for the guitarre d'amour or arpeggione - a kind of enlarged guitar that could be bowed cello-style. The instrument did not survive longer than a few years, but this piece by Schubert is a lovely reminder. This edition is transcribed for flute by James Galway and edited by Phillip Moll for the Great Performer's Edition series.The opening Allegro Moderato is built around a wistful melody. A second theme proceeds in gentle gusts of semiquavers (the arpeggione could not play fast notes with much volume at all, and so the Sonata's quicker portions are almost always marked piano or pianissimo). The Adagio is a rich but introverted musing on an almost hymn-like subject, at the end Schubert invites the soloist to improvise a brief transition into the final, multi-sectioned Allegretto.

The 'Arpeggione' was a guitar-like instrument tuned in the same way as the guitar, but held between the knees and played with a bow. The instrument possessed a warm quality and it was this attribute which Schubert exploited in the sonata which he wrote for it in 1824. Schubert's manuscript on which this edition is based contains an alternative violin part which dates from the same period. To avoid an excess of leger lines and clef changes Schubert wrote the arpeggioned part almost exclusively in the treble clef which the performer was expected to read an octave lower than written. The work was edited for the viola when it came into its own as a solo instrument around the turn of the century.

Commissioned to honor a marriage celebration, this text by the early 20th-century poet, Amy Lowell, speaks to love and commitment. But the title is enigmatic (no sprigs of resemary are mentioned in the poem itself) until one discovers that in addition to its well-known properties as a plant and herb, Rosemary is a traditional symbol of remembrance and constancy; so the author made a knowing and perfect choice for the title. In setting this text, the composer creates a harmonic richness which would complement and reflect the ?soft richness? of Lowell's words of recalling and caring.
