Aria and Fugue

The Aria features a lyrical, somewhat melancholy melody in the solo instrument which is continually supported by rich, regularly pulsating chords in the accompaniment. Contrasting sections are faster and mysterious in character, with a return to the opening idea. The Fugue is based on a subject, both lively and melancholy, in compound meter. This subject is treated with standard devices of development, including inversion and augmentation.

Aria and Chorale

Written as one continuous movement, the music begins with a haunting "Aria." A chromatic musical language creates a mysterious mood. The pianist and violinist trade musical motives back and forth as equal but differing partners. A brief interlude segues into the "Chorale" section, which is as soaring and reassuring as the beginning was uneasy. The two ideas create a fulfilling balance and the work ends peacefully.

Mrs. Noah from Hotel Eden

Mrs. Noah is about middle-aged love. It centers around the relationship between Noah and his wife, Mrs. Noah, a name she hates being called. In this light-hearted aria, she complains that, everywhere she visits, people call her Mrs. Noah. She mentions different locations that she has been in the world: France, Genoa, Samoa, along the Mississippi, Hawaii, and Shenandoah. With these places, the music changes to reflect musical styles that are native to each location. At the end of the aria, she pleads to be called by her “real name,” Rosalyn! Mrs. Noah is the aria from Act II of the Three-Act Chamber Opera, Hotel Eden.

This work is built on a theme of the late Virginia composer, Ludwig Liehn. Commissioned for the 2009 Mid-Atlantic Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists, it has six movemements: Intrada (2 versions are printed), Ostinato, Celestes, Aria, Interlude, and Toccata. The first five movements are varied in style and mood. The final movement is a fiery toccata. This accessible and captivating piece has been featured on American Public Media's "Pipedreams" program, and recently received its European premiere at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris.
