Il Cinghiale di Bronzo : Suite for Concert Band

This suite is based on the fairy tale The Bronze Pig by Hans Christian Andersen.This is a story about a boy who wants to be a painter and a pig made of bronze. This pig, in Florence town square, is a bronze statue with clear water pouring from its mouth. Legend has it that when an innocent child sits on its back, that the pig can run. In three movements; Flying Dreams in a Starlight Sky, La Via Porta Rossa and Twilight on the Arno River this work is a highly descriptive storytelling piece that will be equally enjoyed by young and old alike. Definitely one not to be snorted at!

A New Beginning

A New Beginning begins with a beautiful and sensitive chorale shaping the musical ideas. This chorale builds up to a fast and rhythmical setting, creating a vivid and spectacular feel, with lots of percussion. The instrumentation is versatile and colourful, which makes the piece very pleasant to play and work on for each instrumental group within the band. The music slows down again in the finale, but in a maestoso style. This leads onto a dramatic and impressive ending!

A Golden Jubilation

This work was composed as a commission by the Aikodai Meiden High School Symphonic Band, for the 50th anniversary of their annual concert; the title A Golden Jubilation is a reference to this. The close friendship between Hiroki Ito, theconductor of the band, and Satoshi Yagisawa resulted in this brilliant and exhilarating fanfare of approximately two minutes in length; the piece is ideal to use as a concert opener. The original composition was arranged for an extremely wide rangeof instruments and a band of 200 musicians, including a separate ‘banda’, harp and a variety of special instruments. This new version has been rescored for standard band instrumentation by the composer himself.

You're a Lady

Songwriter and composer Peter Skellern was a great writer of many truly sensitive love songs, with You’re A Lady being the most famous by far. This evergreen was originally performed with brass band backing, making it an obvious choice for a brass band arrangement.

To a Friend

When you have been playing in a band for a long time, you will know that music belongs to the most beautiful moments in life, but also to the roughest times. Making music together can give you strength when things are difficult.To a Friend is a wonderfully comforting work for anyone going through a dark time. Jacob de Haan composed the work for his father in law, Gerard Bosch, a musician to the core. The piece received its first performance justweeks before his passing. On a sun-kissed evening, his friends, the musicians of his two music societies Oefening Baart Kunst (Practice Makes Perfect) Otterlo, and the Reünie Orkest Artillerie Trompetterkorps (Reunion BandArtillery Trumpet Corps) played the work for Gerard - an unknowing yet beautiful goodbye.

A Grieg Suite

Many of Grieg’s compositions have a strong Norwegian character and the three songs used for this suite are no exception. The first movement Fremad!, Fremad! has a majestic character, the second, Stille Nu, sounds rather sad due to its minor key, and the final movement, Fola Fola, Blakken is a cheerful allegro. Bring a bit of Scandinavian magic to your concert with this exciting suite.

In A Flemish Christmas, Jan Hadermann tells the Christmas story by means of four Old Flemish Christmas Songs.Mary is chosen to bring Jesus Christ, the son of God, into the world: Het was een maged uitverkoren (‘She was a virgin chosen’).On the occasion of a census, Mary, who is with child, and Joseph, her husband to be, travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, where Jesus will be born in a humble stable: Maria die zoude naar Bethlehem gaan (Mary would go to Bethlehem’).O kerstnacht, schoner dan de dagen (‘Oh Christmas Night, more beautiful than the days’) is a stately chorale that sings the praises of Jesus’ birth.Three wise men from the East, Caspar,Melchior and Balthazar, follow a bright star in the sky, which leads them to Bethlehem. There, they worship the newborn King, and offer him gold, frankincense and myrrh: Wij komen van Oosten (We’ve come from the East’).This musical Christmas story ends with a festive repeat of the third movement, the stately chorale.

Music for a Solemnity : a Tribute to John Williams

Jan de Haan took as a starting point for Music for a Solemnity an old custom from the Dutch town of Hoogeveen, by which the faithful are called to church with drums. It was also inspired by the music of John Williams. This unusual combination has resulted in a solemn work in which old traditional methods are united with modern rhythms and melodic lines.

You've Got a Friend

In the sixties Carole King wrote several hits with Gerry Goffin, her first husband, like The Loco-Motion (performed by Little Eva at the time) and (You Make me Feel Like) A Natural Woman (performed by Aretha Franklin). In 1971, she released her most successful solo album Tapestry, which contained the track You've Got a Friend, a song which later became a major hit in James Taylor's version. A Vision of the First Light

A Vision of the First Light was commissioned by the Kitami Wind Ensemble, as a commemorative work for their 30th Anniversary. Satoshi Yagisawa composed this piece to conjure “Illusion seen through the dawn” of Hokkaido. The work starts with a quiet and beautiful introduction describing the landscape. The music is rising towards a festive, celebrating fanfare, before a deep tranquility descends, towards the end, creating a moment of reflection.

Variations on a Chord

Variations on a Chord was composed on the occasion of the second lustrum of the Dutch Brass Band Championships celebrated in 1990. The piece is the immediate sequel to Contrasten a piece which was composed in 1986, and which is performed all over the world. Not only was the final chord of this previous work used as a starting point for the new composition, but Variations on a Chord is also the first concert piece for brass band composed by Jan de Haan since then. The several variations are based on a solemn theme. The so-called minor-major seventh chord is easily detectable. The structure of the piece is such that the lyrical theme is preceded by a majestic introduction, and isfollowed by eight variations each strongly contrasting in character. The piece finishes in a short but extremely spectacular coda.

Bliss : Impressions of a Village

Bliss: Impressions of a Village contains three impressions of a village in the beautiful Brabant province in the Netherlands. The fi rst movement is in a very ‘classical style’ and, appropriately, captures the village’s history. Saxophones and a glockenspiel follow the path of a small, playful river. The entire band join in as the small river approaches an ancient castle. The third movement contains lots of interesting rhythms portraying the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the village.

Van Beringen used Bach’s chorale Brich an, o schönes Morgenlicht (‘Break forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light’) from his Christmas Oratorio and the recitative Behold, a Virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel, God with Us from Händel’s Messiah. A perfect way to say Merry Christmas in music!
