Sonata da Chiesa

Sonata da Chiesa for organ and wind orchestra is a work in three movements. The first movement presents three melodic lines which are developed in turn. The second movement introduces a theme by Johann Pachelbel followed by several variations on the theme - a technique favoured by Kees Schoonenbeek. The third movement is a neo-Baroque rondo which introduces thematic elements from the first movement. This is a work rich in colour and sound.

The city of Caldas da Rainha lies on the west coast of Portugal. The name refers to the thermal baths (caldas) as well as to the word for queen (rainha). This festive work depicts several beautiful venues of ‘Rainha’, and can beseen as a tribute to the queen Eleanor, who founded the settlement at the end of the 15th Century.

Giacomo da Lentini was a 13th century Italian poet who was a notary at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II and is said to have invented the sonnet. Lentini’s Ballad is based on the famous poem ‘Amor è un desio che ven da core’ (Love is a desire that comes from the heart). It sounds great as an instrumental work, but there is also an option for a vocal version using the Italian lyrics of the poem, making the arrangement even more special!

A Bach Selection

These three pieces can serve perfectly well as a suite of sonatas - a coherent but varied whole - although in their original form they are unrelated. The adaptations have been kept to a minimum, so that the true Bach is still abundantly present in the music. Contains: Prelude XXII from The Well-Tempered Clavier • Adagio (originally from the Sonata for violin and obbligato harpsichord in B minor, BWV 1014) • Allegro from the Sonata for viola da gamba and harpsichord BWV 1028.

Singin’ in the Rain : from Singin’ in the Rain

Though the song Singin’ in the Rain first appeared in an early American sound film in 1929, its popularity nowadays is largely attributed to the unforgettable scene from the 1952 film of the same name, with Gene Kelly gleefully singing and dancing through the streets of Hollywood in the pouring rain and getting soaked to the skin. The swinging charm of the song’s melody, also now a popular jazz standard, has now successfully been encapsulated in Anthony Gröger’s new arrangement for string quartet.

Variazioni in Blue

Variazioni in Blue is a series of variations in which elements from the Blues, such as the specific ‘blue notes’, run throughout the piece. Following a stately introduction, which includes part of the theme, is an ornamental variation in ‘classical style’. We then hear a variation in ‘Blues style”, followed by a fast variation with an Eastern European folklore feel. The ‘Andante con espressivo’ is particularly fine with its attractive harmonic changes. This variation develops into a repeat of the previous folklore variations with its ‘major’ variation forming a climax towards the end.

George Gershwin’s music combines musical styles heard in the United States at the beginning of this century such as jazz and blues, with aspects of European classical music. Gershwin’s breakthrough came in 1924 with Rhapsody in Blue. Following several versions of this piece Gershwin made what is probably the best known arrangement - for piano and symphony orchestra. Takahashi has created a further new and exciting version for wind orchestra.

Jacques Offenbach was born in 1819 in Cologne, Germany, but as a child he moved to Paris where he received a thorough musical education. In his operetta Orpheus in the Underworld, Offenbach parodies the famous Greek legend of Orpheus and Euridice. Indirectly, however, he criticises the complacency of many of his contemporaries. The overture was not written entirely by Offenbach, Carl Binder added various pieces to it for a Viennese production of this operetta in 1860 and since then, these pieces have remained part of the composition. This appealing transcription includes the famous Can Can which is sure to get your audience high kicking in the aisles!
