Bach for Brass 5: Kantaten BWV 1-100 [Cor, Timp]

Now that all four trumpet volumes of the series BACH FOR BRASS have appeared in print, the publisher is now presenting Vol. 5, the first of two for horns. Like its predecessors, this volume too is set in generously engraved short scores designed for practical performance. The parts include bar numbers, numerous cues, timpani parts if applicable, as well as the most important information concerning origins, original instrument names in the sources, and much more. An instructive foreword in three languages [German, English, and French] and facsimiles round off the picture. Weihnachtslieder mit dem Thomanerchor Leipzig

The inspired singing of Christmas carols by the Thomanerchor Leipzig, attracts large congregations to the church every Christmas. The present CD documents this long tradition. Georg Christoph Biller, the sixteenth Thomaskantor since Bach, has assembled the program on a theological basis: first come Old Testament prophecies of the coming of the Messiah, which is finally celebrated musically by the entire congragation. Along with well-known carols such as "Macht hoch die Tür", "O du fröhliche" and "Stille Nacht" the less familiar Christmas songs in this recording bring attractions of their own, and they enable the listener to take part in the Christmas carol singing of theThomanerchor Leipzig.

Mitten im Leben 1517

The Calmus Ensemble and the Lautten Compagney embark on a musical journey into the 16th century: Using Martin Luther’s paean Mitten wir im Leben sind as its starting point, the musicians paint a lively picture of life during the Reformation era. In both the sacred and secular works we encounter joyful delight and high-spirited merriment just as much as never-ending distress and grievous misery. The apparent parallels with the present time cause us to smile quietly, while statements to themes such as nature and home cause us to be pensive. In addition to the many original compositions, a whole series of new arrangements which make the 16th century songs swing have come intobeing through the collaboration of the two ensembles.

The Bassoon Abroad. Foreign Composers in Britain

Several composers from the European continent established themselves in Britain in the first half of the 18th century. For a lot of them, mainly influenced by the Italian style, it was a necessity to musically integrate their compositions, while they helped molding the element of “Britishness” in British music in the first place. On this CD the Ensemble Chameleon around the British bassoonist Jennifer Harris [who is living in Germany today] explores the musical style of John Ernest Galliard and Luigi Merci, complementing it with Scottish traditional songs. The multifaceted, colorful interpretation shows that the bassoon does not solely exist to serve as a muffled and dustybass of the wind family: it is able to sigh, to speak and to laugh, in short: to come alive.

Two superlative German ensembles assemble for an eminently creative summit meeting: the Calmus Ensemble and the musicians of Wolfgang Katschner’s Lautten Compagney meet one another under “Bach Arcades”: Johann Sebastian Bach’s chorales, so to speak, form the pillars on which the musicians, with curiosity and a willingness to experiment, erect a new and fascinating cupola of sound with works by Arvo Pärt, Guillaume Dufay, John Tavener and others. In addition, the timbres of the marimba and saxophone imbue the sound of the works recorded here with freshness and ease, time and again. With much humor and charm, unusual and surprising elements flow into many a familiar chorale,thus causing us to prick up our ears. Surprising arches of sound, supported by the foundation of Bach’s music, come into being and, with every Bach chorale, open up new musical spaces for the listener.

The popularity of Johann Sebastian Bach’s motets is matched by the problematic manner in which they have been handed down to us. The autograph scores and parts used by Bach have been preserved for only two motets. For the remaining motets we must be content with copies whose reliability is, at best, inconsistent. Current editions of the motets are based primarily on the Neue Bach-Ausgabe [1965], which until now has been widely accepted as the standard text for these works. In the meantime, however, additional copies have been discovered and our knowledge concerning the music of Bach has been considerably advanced. In light of these developments it was time for acomplete critical reevaluation of the complex situation of the sources. The result is an edition in which the music has changed in countless details and it is hoped that we have come a good deal closer to the intentions of Bach.

Motets and Anthems from Byrd to Elgar

The choral tradition of English cathedrals and universities is famous the world over. Through the centuries on the British Isles an immense storehouse of musical treasures have been composed: beautiful sounding choral settings which, in the meantime, have come to enjoy a great popularity on the European continent. For the collection of English Choral Music. Motets and Anthems from Byrd to Elgar Richard Mailänder and Christopher Robinson, the editors, have compiled 40 outstanding motets and anthems from the 16th to the 19th centuries. In Germany and elsewhere in Europe these four- and five-part settings, whether a cappella or with obbligato organ, are especially suited forservices or church concerts. The composers of the golden age of English music, Thomas Tallis, William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons are represented in this collection, as are the baroque masters Henry Purcell and William Boyce and, among other composers from the 19th century, Samuel Sebastian Wesley, Charles Villiers Stanford, Charles Hubert Parry and Edward Elgar. A supplementary CD, performed and recorded by the Figuralchor Cologne, is also available.

In addition to the famous six motets, the collection also contains “Ich lasse dich nicht” BWV Anh. 159 and “Jauchzet dem Herrn alle Welt” BWV Anh. 160. In recent times “Ich lasse dich nicht” has been counted among Bach’s authentic works. The motet “Jauchzet dem Herrn alle Welt” is a combination of movements by Telemann and Bach. Those attributable to Bach include a setting of the chorale “Sei Lob und Preis” from Cantata BWV 28; this was also handed down by itself as BWV 231.

Liebeslieder - Love Songs : 80 arrangements for weddings and celebrations

What would love be without music or music without love! Many couples associate unforgettable beautiful hours, a first meeting, or first kiss with a particular song. And composers have always been inspired and stimulated by love, have celebrated romantic love and longing from afar, secret love, and jealousy. Weihnachtslieder aus aller Welt

Throughout the world Christmas is celebrated sometimes at the end of December, sometimes at the beginning of January. And everywhere, singing Christmas carols is part of the celebrations. Some carols, such as Adeste fideles O come, all ye faithful are sung throughout the world, but many countries have their own particular carols which reflect their own customs and traditions. These Christmas carols from all over the world feature in the latest instalment of the LIEDERPROJEKT which is published in autumn 2015. For the song book the editors have chosen about 72 carols from over 40 countries from Spain and Poland, from Mexico and Canada, China and Australia, Iceland andthe Congo. The spectrum is wide-ranging: indispensible standards (carols, spirituals, noëls) are joined by musical treasures which are largely unknown. All the songs are given in their original language and in German translation, with chord symbols above the music for easy instrumental accompaniment. The song book contains an instrumental CD to get to know the pieces and sing along with. For all the songs, one or two verses have been recorded, and different instruments and arrangements give an idea of the wide musical range. Frank Walka, who illustrated the hugely successful Wiegenlieder (Lullabies) and Weihnachtslieder (Christmas Carols) volumes for the LIEDERPROJEKT, has created 17 beautiful double-page illustrations for the song book.
