Rapunzel : The Prince in the Forest - The End

Rapunzel is based on the famous Grimm fairy tale of the same name and tells a musical story of fantasy, drama and adventure. From the original four-part composition, Bert Appermont made an instrumentation of two parts (The Prince in the Forest – The End) for brass ensemble and percussion.

This composition is based on the children’s song ‘Three Blind Mice’, of which the melody is featured in a range of variations: in a canon, in inversion, in minor, transformed, with changing harmonisations and orchestrations, andin different times and tempi. The work consists of three continuous, contrasting movements: 1) Mouse March: The mice cheerfully set off while the original melody is presented as a march. - 2) Hymn: In a tuneful hymn,the wonderful praises of the life of mice are sung. - 3) Catch Me If You Can: In an animated chase, the farmer’s wife is trying to catch the mice. Following a stirring acceleration, she cuts off their tails in accordancewith the lyrics of the song. I hope this work, with its humorous touch, will be a welcome contribution to the expansion of interesting repertoire for the lower divisions. - Bert Appermont

Friendly Takeover was composed for the 2016 Swiss Wind Band Convention in Montreux. In this three movement piece the composer experiments with lyrical motives combined with rhythmical pulses in different meters throughout the piece. In the finale, the musical scene is taken over completely by groove-based rhythms. This takeover, however, is of a friendly nature, as the various beats are not being conceived as rivals of the lyrical motives, but are rather supposed to infuse energy and vitality to the latter. Out of Earth

Out of Earth is a free musical exploration of the creation mythology from Ovid's "Metamorphoses". Much like in other mythologies, it describes the journey of the human race from a once golden age through its destruction by the great flood culminating in its rebirth by the Earth. In the course of its composition, the music began to emerge from these images and then grew beyond them. Out of Earth was commissioned by the Aulos Wind Orchestra, Kriens (CH) and was first performed in October 2015 under the direction of José Rafael Pascual Vilaplana.

Kapriolen

In this playful work for beginning percussionists the focus is on the interplay between piano and drums. From a technical point of view, various entertaining rudimentary exercises are included to improve skills in simple independence, basic rolls and keeping a secure tempo.
