C-Gel, also known as HF antidote gel, is a topical gel containing 2.5% calcium gluconate. It is used in the first aid treatment of those exposed to hydrofluoric acid. Contact with hydrofluoric acid on the skin can be extremely dangerous and have lifelong effects. The immediate application of HF antidote gel to a chemical burn site can considerably reduce bone and deep tissue damage. It is imperative that all workplaces that require employees to come into contact with hydrofluoric acid have calcium gluconate gel readily available in the case of an accident. Calcium gluconate gel, or HF antidote gel, works by chemically reacting with hydrofluoric acid to form insoluble calcium fluoride. This prevents the hydrofluoric acid from extracting calcium from the body tissues and bones of an individual suffering a chemical burn.
