Gendered Capitalism Sewing Machines and Multinational Business in Spain and Mexico 1850-1940

Gendered Capitalism Sewing Machines and Multinational Business in Spain and Mexico 1850-1940

Gendered Capitalism: Sewing Machines and Multinational Business in Spain and Mexico 1850–1940 is a history of the gendered corporation a study that examines how ideas and ideals about domesticity and the cultures of sewing and embroidery being gender-specific shaped the US-headquartered Singer Sewing Machine Company’s operations around the world. In contrast to production-driven and culture-neutral analyses of the multinational enterprise this book focuses on both the supply and the demand side to argue that consumers and the cultural worlds of those—mainly women—using the sewing machine for personal purposes or for the market shaped corporate organization. This book is a global history of Singer but it also focuses on the cases of Spain and Mexico to highlight nations where the sewing machine multinational never established manufacturing operations. Casa Singer was a mostly profitable and a long-term selling and marketing operation in both countries. Gendered Capitalism demonstrates that local Spanish and Mexican agents both men and women developed and expanded Singer’s selling system to the extent that the multinational company was seen as domestic both in the location sense and because of its focus on the private sphere of the home. By bringing the cases of Spain and Mexico and the cultural everyday realm of practices related to sewing and embroidery that the sewing machine was part of to the center of the study of international business Gendered Capitalism further reveals the layers of complexities and multitudes that conform the history of global capitalism. This book will be of interest to readers and scholars in the fields of business history economic cultural history management studies international business women’s history gender studies and the history of technology. | Gendered Capitalism Sewing Machines and Multinational Business in Spain and Mexico 1850-1940

The Routledge Companion to Interdisciplinary Studies in Singing Volume II: Education

The Routledge Companion to Interdisciplinary Studies in Singing Volume II: Education

The Routledge Companion to Interdisciplinary Studies in Singing Volume II: Education examines the many methods and motivations for vocal pedagogy promoting singing not just as an art form arising from the musical instrument found within every individual but also as a means of communication with social psychological and didactic functions. Presenting research from myriad fields of study beyond music—including psychology education sociology computer science linguistics physiology and neuroscience—the contributors address singing in three parts: Learning to Sing Naturally Formal Teaching of Singing Using Singing to Teach In 2009 the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada funded a seven-year major collaborative research initiative known as Advancing Interdisciplinary Research in Singing (AIRS). Together global researchers from a broad range of disciplines addressed three challenging questions: How does singing develop in every human being? How should singing be taught and used to teach? How does singing impact wellbeing? Across three volumes The Routledge Companion to Interdisciplinary Studies in Singing consolidates the findings of each of these three questions defining the current state of theory and research in the field. Volume II: Education focuses on the second question and offers an invaluable resource for anyone who identifies as a singer wishes to become a singer works with singers or is interested in the application of singing for the purposes of education.

The Songs of Joni Mitchell Gender Performance and Agency

The Songs of Joni Mitchell Gender Performance and Agency

An unorthodox musician from the start singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell's style of composing performing and of playing (and tuning) the guitar is unique. In the framework of sexual difference and the gendered discourses of rock this immediately begs the questions: are Mitchell's songs specifically feminine and if so to what extent and why? Anne Karppinen addresses this question focusing on the kind of music and lyrics Mitchell writes the representation of men and women in her lyrics how her style changes and evolves over time and how cultural context affects her writing. Linked to this are the concepts of subjectivity and authorship: when a singer-songwriter sings a song in the first person about whom are they actually singing? Mitchell offers a fascinating study for the songs she writes and sings are intricately woven from the strands of her own life. Using methods from critical discourse analysis this book examines recorded performances of songs from Mitchell's first nine studio albums and the contemporary reviews of these albums in Anglo-American rock magazines. In one of the only books to discuss Mitchell's recorded performances with a focus that extends beyond the seminal album Blue Karppinen explores the craft of Mitchell's songwriting and her own attitudes towards it as well as the dynamics and politics of rock criticism in the 1960s and 1970s more generally. | The Songs of Joni Mitchell Gender Performance and Agency

Opera Coaching Professional Techniques for the Répétiteur

Opera Coaching Professional Techniques for the Répétiteur

Opera Coaching: Professional Techniques for the Répétiteur Second Edition is an update to the first practical guide for opera coaches when working with opera singers to help them meet the physical and vocal demands of a score in order to shape a performance. Opera coaching remains a mystery to many musicians. While an opera coach (or répétiteur) is principally tasked with ensuring singers sing the right notes and words the coach’s purview extends well beyond pitches and pronunciation. The opera coach must have a full understanding of human physiognomy and the human voice as well as a knowledge of the many languages used in Western vocal music and over four centuries of opera repertoire – all to recognize what must happen for success when a singer steps on stage. NEW to this second edition: New and updated chapters throughout featuring new discussions on large ensembles twenty-first-century demands and more. Deeper investigation of the styles of and problems posed by particular operas. Revised chapter structure that allows for an expanded and progressive emphasis on technical work. Modern singers have bemoaned the scarcity of good vocal coaches and conductors – those who understand voices and repertoire alike. Opera Coaching: Professional Techniques for the Répétiteur Second Edition demystifies the role of the opera coach outlining the obstacles facing both the opera singer and the coach who seeks to realize the performer’s full potential. | Opera Coaching Professional Techniques for the Répétiteur

Introduction to Econophysics Contemporary Approaches with Python Simulations

Introduction to Econophysics Contemporary Approaches with Python Simulations

Econophysics explores the parallels between physics and economics and is an exciting topic that is attracting increasing attention. However there is a lack of literature that explains the topic from a broad perspective. This book introduces advanced undergraduates and graduate students in physics and engineering to the topic from this outlook and is accompanied by rigorous mathematics which ensures that this will also be a good guide for established researchers in the field as well as researchers from other fields such as mathematics and statistics who are interested in the topic. Key features: Presents a multidisciplinary approach that will be of interest to students and researchers from physics engineering mathematics statistics and other physical sciences Accompanied by Python code with further learning opportunities available for readers to download from the CRC Press website. Accessible to both students and researchers Carlo R. da Cunha is an associate professor of physics and engineering physics at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) and has been since 2011. Dr. da Cunha received his M. Sc. Degree from the West Virginia University in 2001 and his Ph. D. degree from Arizona State University in 2005. He was a postdoctoral researcher at McGill University in Canada in 2006 and an assistant professor of engineering at the University Federal de Santa Catarina between 2007 and 2011. He has been a guest professor at the Technische Universität Wien (Austria) Chiba University (Japan) and Arizona State University (US). His research revolves around the physics of complex systems where he has been drawing parallels between physical and economic systems from quantum to social levels.
