Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture Designing in Mixed Realities

Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture Designing in Mixed Realities

Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture: Designing in Mixed Realities presents a curated selection of projects and texts contributed by leading international architects and designers who are using virtual reality technologies in their design process. It triggers discussion and debate on exploring the aesthetic potential and establishing its language as an expressive medium in architectural design. Although virtual reality is not new and the technology has evolved rapidly the aesthetic potential of the medium is still emerging and there is a great deal more to explore. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the current use of virtual reality technologies in the architectural design process. Contributions are presented in six parts fully illustrated with over 150 images. Recent projects presented are distributed in five themes: introduction to mixed realities; space and form; context and ambiguity; materiality and movement; body and social. Each theme includes richly illustrated essays by leading academics and practitioners including those from Zaha Hadid Architects and MVRDV detailing their design process using data-driven methodologies. Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture expands the use of technology per se and focuses on how architecture can benefit from its aesthetic potential during the design process. A must-read for practitioners academics and students interested in cutting-edge digital design. | Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture Designing in Mixed Realities

Ageing in Place in Urban Environments Critical Perspectives

Ageing in Place in Urban Environments Critical Perspectives

Ageing in Place in Urban Environments considers together two major trends influencing economic and social life: population ageing on the one side and urbanisation on the other. Both have been identified as dominant demographic trends of the twenty-first century. Cities are where the majority of people of all ages now live and where they will spend their old age. Nevertheless cities are typically imagined and structured with a younger working-age population in mind while older people are rarely incorporated into the mainstream of thinking and planning around urban environments. Cities can contribute to vulnerability arising from high levels of population turnover environmental problems gentrification and reduced availability of affordable housing. However they can also provide innovative forms of support and services essential to promoting the quality of life of older people. Policies in Europe have emphasised the role of the local environment in promoting “ageing in place” a term used to describe the goal of helping people to remain in their own homes and communities for as long as they wish. However while this has been the dominant approach the places in which older people are ageing have often proved to be challenging environments. The book explores the forces behind these developments and how older people have responded. Drawing upon approaches from social gerontology urban studies geography and sociology this book will be essential reading for researchers policymakers and practitioners searching for innovative ways to improve the lives of older people living in urban environments. Women in Sufism Female Religiosities in a Transnational Order

Women in Sufism Female Religiosities in a Transnational Order

Exploring the diverse myriad of female religious identities that exist within the various branches of the Moroccan Sufi Order Qādiriyya Būdshīshiyya today this book evidences a wide array of religious identities from those more typical of Berber culture to those characterised by a ‘sober’ approach to Sufism as well as those that denote New Age eclecticism. The book researches the ways in which religious discourses are corporeally endorsed. After providing an overview of the Order historically and today enunciating the processes by which this local tarīqa from North-eastern Morocco has become the international organization that it is now the book explores the religious body in movement in performance and in relation to the social order. It analyses pilgrimage by assessing the annual visit that followers of Hamza Būdshīsh make to the central lodge of the Order in Madāgh; it explores bodily religious enactments in ritual performance by discussing the central practices of Sufi ritual as manifested in the Būdshīshiyya and delves attention into diverse understandings of faith healing and health issues. Women and Sufism provides a detailed insight into religious healing sufi rituals and sufi pilgrimage and is essential reading for those seeking to understand Islam in Morocco or those with an interest in Anthropology and Middle East studies more generally. | Women in Sufism Female Religiosities in a Transnational Order
