What is Consciousness? A Debate

What is Consciousness? A Debate

What is consciousness and why is it so philosophically and scientifically puzzling? For many years philosophers approached this question assuming a standard physicalist framework on which consciousness can be explained by contemporary physics biology neuroscience and cognitive science. This book is a debate between two philosophers who are united in their rejection of this kind of standard physicalism - but who differ sharply in what lesson to draw from this. Amy Kind defends dualism 2. 0 a thoroughly modern version of dualism (the theory that there are two fundamentally different kinds of things in the world: those that are physical and those that are mental) decoupled from any religious or non-scientific connotations. Daniel Stoljar defends non-standard physicalism a kind of physicalism different from both the standard version and dualism 2. 0. The book presents a cutting-edge assessment of the philosophy of consciousness and provides a glimpse at what the future study of this area might bring. Key Features Outlines the different things people mean by consciousness and provides an account of what consciousness is Reviews the key arguments for thinking that consciousness is incompatible with physicalism Explores and provides a defense of contrasting responses to those arguments with a special focus on responses that reject the standard physicalist framework Provides an account of the basic aims of the science of consciousness Written in a lively and accessibly style Includes a comprehensive glossary | What is Consciousness? The Performance Management Systems Playbook Integrating the ISO 56002 and 56004 Standards Into Your Business Operations

The Performance Management Systems Playbook Integrating the ISO 56002 and 56004 Standards Into Your Business Operations

The objective of the ISO 56002 standard is to provide a framework on how to build an innovation ecosystem that can be sustained over time. Similar to the quality management system that ISO established decades ago this standard provides instructions related to best practices on how to establish an Innovative Management System within an organization. However it does not provide guidance on how to implement and/or use the standard. The ISO Standard 56004 Innovation Management Assessment was designed to define the maturity level of an organization's Innovation Management System. The primary purpose of most Innovative Management Systems is to process a continuous flow of new and highly creative outputs that will meet external customers’ needs and expectations. The users of ISO 56002 and 56004 know that they are what to do documents. This book however shows you how to do it! Both ISO Standard 56002 and 56004 are focused on improving the organization's innovative management system. This book focuses on how to train employees on how to use the system to add value to the organization’s stakeholders. There are no books out on the subject – this book greatly assists managers business leaders entrepreneurs and consultants seeking help in using the innovation management system effectively and efficiently. Essentially this book presents an effective marriage between the innovative management system and how it will operate when it becomes part of the operating procedures. | The Performance Management Systems Playbook Integrating the ISO 56002 and 56004 Standards Into Your Business Operations

Creating Intelligent Content with Lightweight DITA

Creating Intelligent Content with Lightweight DITA

Creating Intelligent Content with Lightweight DITA documents the evolution of the Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) – a widely used open standard for structuring technical content. DITA has grown in popularity and features since its origins as an internal grammar for structuring technical documentation at IBM. This book introduces Lightweight DITA (LwDITA which should be read as Lightweight DITA) as a proposed version of the DITA standard that reduces its dependence on complex Extensible Markup Language (XML) structures and simplifies its authoring experience. This volume aims to reconcile discrepancies and similarities in methods for authoring content in industry and academia and does so by reporting on DITA’s evolution through the lens of computational thinking which has been connected in scholarship and media to initiatives for learning to code and programming. Evia’s core argument is that if technical communicators are trained with principles of rhetorical problem solving and computational thinking they can create structured content in lightweight workflows with XML HTML5 and Markdown designed to reduce the learning curve associated with DITA and similar authoring methodologies. At the same time this book has the goal of making concepts of structured authoring and intelligent content easier to learn and teach in humanities-based writing and communication programs. This book is intended for practitioners and students interested in structured authoring or the DITA standard.
