A Holter for Parkinson’s Disease Motor Symptoms: STAT-On

A Holter for Parkinson’s Disease Motor Symptoms: STAT-On

A new information and communication technology (ICT) has been deployed in the battle against Parkinson’s disease a neurodegenerative disorder that is both progressive and disabling with significant impact on quality of life. This book explains the experience following from the achieved results in the REMPARK project on Parkinson’s disease management up to the launch of a new medical product to the European market STAT-ON™. The new medical device STAT-ON™ is a real Holter for the motor symptoms associated to PD. It provides objective information about the severity and distribution of PD motor symptoms and their fluctuations in daily life allowing for an unbiased and correct monitoring of the patient. This real-time remote monitoring solution gives additional information to neurologists opening up new possibilities for more effective treatment more accurate control in clinical trials and for early detection of motor complications. The number of PD patients is continuously rising adding complexity especially in the management at the level of public health. It is an incurable disease with a symptomatic treatment that tries to alleviate the associated symptoms through a correct adjustment of the medication. For this reason it is also very important to be aware of changes in the manifestation of the symptoms which may indicate the need for an adjustment or even a change in the therapy strategy. The intensive complementary use of STAT-ON™ by neurologists health professionals and researchers will increase the independence and quality of life of patients improving their disease management and contributing to a deeper understanding of the nature of the disease. Introduction to Green Chemistry

Interest in green chemistry and clean processes has grown so much in recent years that topics such as fluorous biphasic catalysis metal organic frameworks and process intensification which were barely mentioned in the First Edition have become major areas of research. In addition government funding has ramped up the development of fuel cells and biofuels. This reflects the evolving focus from pollution remediation to pollution prevention. Copiously illustrated with more than 800 figures the Third Edition provides an update from the frontiers of the field. It features supplementary exercises at the end of each chapter relevant to the chemical examples introduced in each chapter. Particular attention is paid to a new concluding chapter on the use of green metrics as an objective tool to demonstrate proof of synthesis plan efficiency and to identify where further improvements can be made through fully worked examples relevant to the chemical industry. NEW AND EXPANDED RESEARCH TOPICS Metal-organic frameworks Metrics Solid acids for alkylation of isobutene by butanes Carbon molecular sieves Mixed micro- and mesoporous solids Organocatalysis Process intensification and gas phase enzymatic reactions Hydrogen storage for fuel cells Reactive distillation Catalysts in action on an atomic scale UPDATED AND EXPANDED CURRENT EVENTS TOPICS Industry resistance to inherently safer chemistry Nuclear power Removal of mercury from vaccines Removal of mercury and lead from primary explosives Biofuels Uses for surplus glycerol New hard materials to reduce wear Electronic waste Smart growth The book covers traditional green chemistry topics including catalysis benign solvents and alternative feedstocks. The Montessori Method

The Montessori Method

Maria Montessori's method of educating children which she details in this book is based on a conception of liberty for the pupil; it entails formal training of separate sensory motor and mental capacities; and leads to rapid and substantial mastery of the elements of reading writing and arithmetic. The Montessori Method is important because it springs from a combination of sympathy and intuition social outlook scientific training intensive study of educational problems and the author's unusual experience as a teacher and educational leader. Following opening statements from J. McV. Hunt and Jaan Valsiner Maria Montessori discusses topics including pedagogical methods used in the children's houses discipline diet gymnastics manual labor education of the senses intellectual education methods of teaching reading and writing language in childhood and teaching of numeration. This classic volume in the education of children takes on urgent relevance for parents teachers and administrators in all parts of our society. The suburban mother seeking an environment of structured freedom for an imaginative quick-learning pre-schooler; the educator jolted into awareness that slum children are irreparably handicapped by cultural impoverishment before the age of six; explorers of new techniques of teaching reading of programmed instruction and learning by conditioning and reinforcement-by-approval all these are instructed by Maria Montessori's theory and the reports of her work in the Casa dei Bambini in the slum quarter of Rome.

Neuromuscular Fundamentals How Our Musculature is Controlled

Neuromuscular Fundamentals How Our Musculature is Controlled

This book is rather unique in its approach and coverage. The approach is essentially that of an engineering textbook emphasizing the quantitative aspects and highlighting the fundamentals and basic concepts involved. The coverage progresses in a logical and systematic manner from the subcellular starting with the electrophysiology of the cell membrane then proceeding to synapses neurons and muscle before considering neuronal motor ensembles and the neuromuscular system as a whole. Simple clear and comprehensive explanations are given throughout. After an introductory chapter on some background material in biology biophysics and chemical kinetics a substantial part of the book (Chapters 2-8) necessarily covers in considerable detail the basic components and processes that underlie the electrical and associated activities of the nervous system. The remaining chapters of the book (Chapters 9-13) focus on the neuromuscular system starting with the structure of muscle cells the generation of force by muscular contraction and muscle receptors. The last chapter examines aspects of the control of movement motor learning and memory the maintenance of posture and locomotion and critically examines some of the theories that have been advanced to explain how movement is controlled. The book is intended for undergraduate or graduate students in the natural sciences mathematics or engineering who seek a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of neuroscience and the somatomotor system in accordance with the aforementioned objectives. The book can serve as a textbook for a one-semester course on the neuromuscular system or as a reference in a more general course on neuroscience. Provides a thorough analytical treatment of membrane electrophysiology starting from the first principles Emphasizes strongly the basic and fundamental concepts throughout Discusses thoroughly the essential features and properties of the basic constituents of the nervous system that is neurons and synapses including the neuromuscular junction Explains the main aspects of posture locomotion and control of movement Includes practice problems throughout the text and a solutions manual will be available for adopting professors Nassir Sabah is professor of biomedical engineering in the electrical and computer engineering department at the American University of Beirut Lebanon.
