Remaking Indigeneity in the Amazon Christianity Colonization and the State

Drawing on archival and ethnographic work this book analyzes how indigeneity Christianity and state-making became intertwined in the Colombian Amazon throughout the 20th century. At the end of the 19th century the state gave Catholic missionaries tutelage over Indigenous groups and their territories but in the case of the Colombian Amazon this tutelage was challenged by evangelical missionaries that arrived in the region in the 1940s with different ideas of civilization and social change. Indigenous conversion to evangelical Christianity caused frictions with other actors while Indigenous groups perceived conversion as way of leverage with settlers. This book shows how evangelical Christianity shaped new forms of indigeneity that did not coincide entirely with the ideas of civilization or development that Catholic missionaries and the state promoted in the region. Since the 1960s the state adapted development policies and programs to Indigenous realities and practices while Indigenous societies appropriated evangelical Christianity in order to navigate the changes brought on by colonization modernity and state-formation. (De)constructing Societal Threats During Times of Deep Mediatization

This book explores how both elite and non-elite actors frame societal threats such as the refugee crisis and COVID-19 using both digital and traditional media. It also explores ways in which the framing of these issues as threatening can be challenged using these platforms. People typically experience societal threats such as war and terrorism through the media they consume both on and offline. Much of the research in this area to date focuses on either how political and media elites present these issues to citizens or audience responses to these frames. This book takes a different approach by focusing on how issues such as the refugee crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic are both constructed and deconstructed in an era of hybrid media. This book considers the new ways time was experienced in the sixteenth- and seventeeth-century Hispanic world in the framework of global Catholicism. It underscores the crucial role that the imitation of Christ plays in modeling how representative writers physically and mentally interiorize temporal impermanence as the Messiah’s suffering body becomes a paradigmatic as well as malleable marker of the avatars of earthly history. Also in the interim as Brazil made the transition to democracy and returned to economic growth many topics on the agenda for the 1980s emerged in clearer focus so that the chapters have all been sharpened and upgraded. Animal Rhetoric and Natural Science in Eighteenth-Century Liberal Political Writing Political Zoologies of the French Enlightenment

Our tendency to read French Enlightenment political writing from a narrow disciplinary perspective has obscured the hybrid character of political philosophy rhetoric and natural science in the period. As Michèle Duchet and others have shown French Enlightenment thinkers developed a philosophical anthropology to support new political norms and models. This book explores how five important eighteenth-century French political authors—Rousseau Diderot La Mettrie Quesnay and Rétif de La Bretonne—also constructed a political zoology in their philosophical and literary writings informed by animal references drawn from Enlightenment natural history science and physiology. Drawing on theoretical work by Derrida Latour de Fontenay and others it shows how these five authors signed on to the old rhetorical tradition of animal comparisons in political philosophy which they renewed via the findings and speculations of contemporary science.
