Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture Designing in Mixed Realities

Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture Designing in Mixed Realities

Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture: Designing in Mixed Realities presents a curated selection of projects and texts contributed by leading international architects and designers who are using virtual reality technologies in their design process. It triggers discussion and debate on exploring the aesthetic potential and establishing its language as an expressive medium in architectural design. Although virtual reality is not new and the technology has evolved rapidly the aesthetic potential of the medium is still emerging and there is a great deal more to explore. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the current use of virtual reality technologies in the architectural design process. Contributions are presented in six parts fully illustrated with over 150 images. Recent projects presented are distributed in five themes: introduction to mixed realities; space and form; context and ambiguity; materiality and movement; body and social. Each theme includes richly illustrated essays by leading academics and practitioners including those from Zaha Hadid Architects and MVRDV detailing their design process using data-driven methodologies. Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture expands the use of technology per se and focuses on how architecture can benefit from its aesthetic potential during the design process. A must-read for practitioners academics and students interested in cutting-edge digital design. | Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture Designing in Mixed Realities

Ageing in Place in Urban Environments Critical Perspectives

Ageing in Place in Urban Environments Critical Perspectives

Ageing in Place in Urban Environments considers together two major trends influencing economic and social life: population ageing on the one side and urbanisation on the other. Both have been identified as dominant demographic trends of the twenty-first century. Cities are where the majority of people of all ages now live and where they will spend their old age. Nevertheless cities are typically imagined and structured with a younger working-age population in mind while older people are rarely incorporated into the mainstream of thinking and planning around urban environments. Cities can contribute to vulnerability arising from high levels of population turnover environmental problems gentrification and reduced availability of affordable housing. However they can also provide innovative forms of support and services essential to promoting the quality of life of older people. Policies in Europe have emphasised the role of the local environment in promoting “ageing in place” a term used to describe the goal of helping people to remain in their own homes and communities for as long as they wish. However while this has been the dominant approach the places in which older people are ageing have often proved to be challenging environments. The book explores the forces behind these developments and how older people have responded. Drawing upon approaches from social gerontology urban studies geography and sociology this book will be essential reading for researchers policymakers and practitioners searching for innovative ways to improve the lives of older people living in urban environments. Conflict and Harmony in Education in Tropical Africa

Conflict and Harmony in Education in Tropical Africa

Originally published in 1975 this book was something of a pioneering study. It examines the three main traditions of African educational development – indigenous Islamic and ‘Western’ – and the resulting harmonies and conflicts that arise from these traditions. Its contributors are all specialists writing about their own particular area of interest covering many countries of tropical Africa. They include a number of well-known African scholars as well as some comparatively new names in the field of African Studies at the time. A feature of the book is the attention that it gives to the education of women – an aspect of ‘nation-building’ that had often been rather neglected. This study is an inter-disciplinary work calling into contribution History Sociology Anthropology Law Linguistics and Medicine as well as Education. It seeks to show how complex the educational situation is in Africa – and how this complexity needs to be appreciated as a background to educational planning. Nobody who has read this volume will be inclined to dismiss educational reform in Africa as ‘a relatively simple matter’ – a point of view too frequently implied by those who have not studied the subject in depth. ‘Off with the old – on with the new’ cannot be so easily implemented as critics within and without the continent sometimes seem to think. More constructively however this volume provides many useful insights into ways in which social tension may be reduced and harmony promoted in and through education. Although it is likely to be of most immediate value to those who are concerned with African education and its administration (especially in teacher-education) the book constitutes a significant contribution to understanding problems of ‘development’. | Conflict and Harmony in Education in Tropical Africa

Women in Sufism Female Religiosities in a Transnational Order

Women in Sufism Female Religiosities in a Transnational Order

Exploring the diverse myriad of female religious identities that exist within the various branches of the Moroccan Sufi Order Qādiriyya Būdshīshiyya today this book evidences a wide array of religious identities from those more typical of Berber culture to those characterised by a ‘sober’ approach to Sufism as well as those that denote New Age eclecticism. The book researches the ways in which religious discourses are corporeally endorsed. After providing an overview of the Order historically and today enunciating the processes by which this local tarīqa from North-eastern Morocco has become the international organization that it is now the book explores the religious body in movement in performance and in relation to the social order. It analyses pilgrimage by assessing the annual visit that followers of Hamza Būdshīsh make to the central lodge of the Order in Madāgh; it explores bodily religious enactments in ritual performance by discussing the central practices of Sufi ritual as manifested in the Būdshīshiyya and delves attention into diverse understandings of faith healing and health issues. Women and Sufism provides a detailed insight into religious healing sufi rituals and sufi pilgrimage and is essential reading for those seeking to understand Islam in Morocco or those with an interest in Anthropology and Middle East studies more generally. | Women in Sufism Female Religiosities in a Transnational Order
