The Organic Chemistry of Sugars

The Organic Chemistry of Sugars

Intrigued as much by its complex nature as by its outsider status in traditional organic chemistry the editors of The Organic Chemistry of Sugars compile a groundbreaking resource in carbohydrate chemistry that illustrates the ease at which sugars can be manipulated in a variety of organic reactions. Each chapter contains numerous examples demonstrating the methods and strategies that apply mainstream organic chemistry to the chemical modification of sugars. The book first describes the discovery development and impact of carbohydrates followed by a discussion of protecting group strategies glycosylation techniques and oligosaccharide syntheses. Several chapters focus on reactions that convert sugars and carbohydrates to non-carbohydrate molecules including the substitution of sugar hydroxyl groups to new groups of synthetic or biological interest cyclitols and carbasugars as well as endocyclic heteroatom substitutions. Subsequent chapters demonstrate the use of sugars in chiral catalysis their roles as convenient starting materials for complex syntheses involving multiple stereogenic centers and syntheses for monosaccharides. The final chapters focus on new and emerging technologies including approaches to combinatorial carbohydrate chemistry the biological importance and chemical synthesis of glycopeptides and the medicinally significant concept of glycomimetics. Presenting the organic chemistry of sugars as a solution to many complex synthetic challenges The Organic Chemistry of Sugars provides a comprehensive treatment of the manipulation of sugars and their importance in mainstream organic chemistry. Daniel E. Levy editor of the Drug Discovery Series is the founder of DEL BioPharma a consulting service for drug discovery programs. He also maintains a blog that explores organic chemistry.

The Cathedrals of Pisa Siena and Florence A Thorough Inspection of the Medieval Construction Techniques

The Cathedrals of Pisa Siena and Florence A Thorough Inspection of the Medieval Construction Techniques

The construction techniques and concepts of the cathedrals of Pisa Siena and Florence are examined in detail based on new data and using a methodological architectural diagnostics approach. New detailed surveys carried out using often advanced tools together with direct and in-depth inspections to examine all parts of the buildings have enabled us to identify the building phases and the different construction techniques used over time. The information thereby acquired also formed the basis for a new interpretation of the archival documents. Accordingly the problems encountered and the solutions adopted in the three cathedrals have been understood: in Pisa the construction of the elliptical dome above the rectangular crossing consisting of six thin pillars below; in Siena the design changes from the first system in the 13th century to the ‘Duomo Nuovo’ and the structural adaptations following earthquakes; the specific construction solutions adopted in Florence during the instability encountered in the construction of the large vaults of the basilican body. The comparison of the three buildings in terms of architectural and construction solutions also revealed unexpected relationships between the construction events of Siena’s Duomo Nuovo and the solutions then used in the large basilican body of Santa Maria del Fiore. The methodology employed has led to an understanding of the actual structure of the three cathedrals an essential basis for a correct evaluation of the state of conservation of the churches for any restoration work. The book is aimed at scholars of architecture and ancient building structures graduate and postgraduate students and architects and engineers who plan architectural conservation and strengthening works for historical buildings. | The Cathedrals of Pisa Siena and Florence A Thorough Inspection of the Medieval Construction Techniques

LTE Cellular Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) Practical Projects for the Cloud and Data Visualization

LTE Cellular Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) Practical Projects for the Cloud and Data Visualization

NB-IoT is the Internet of Things (IoT) technology used for cellular communication. NB-IoT devices deliver much better capability and performance such as: increased area coverage of up to one kilometer; a massive number of devices—up to 200 000—per a single base-station area; longer battery lifetime of ten years; and better indoor and outdoor coverage for areas with weak signal such as underground garages. The cellular NB-IoT technology is a challenging technology to use and understand. With more than 30 projects presented in this book covering many use cases and scenarios this book provides hands-on and practical experience of how to use the cellular NB-IoT for smart applications using Arduino™ Amazon Cloud Google Maps and charts. The book starts by explaining AT commands used to configure the NB-IoT modem; data serialization and deserialization; how to set up the cloud for connecting NB-IoT devices; setting up rules policy security certificates and a NoSQL database on the cloud; how to store and read data in the cloud; how to use Google Maps to visualize NB-IoT device geo-location; and how to use charts to visualize sensor datasets. Projects for Arduino are presented in four parts. The first part explains how to connect the device to the mobile operator and cellular network; perform communication using different network protocols such as TCP HTTP SSL or MQTT; how to use GPS for geo-location applications; and how to upgrade NB-IoT modem firmware over the air. The second part explains the microcontroller unit and how to build and run projects such as a 7-segment display or a real-time clock. The third part explains how NB-IoT can be used with sensor devices such as ultrasonic and environmental sensors. Finally the fourth part explains how NB-IoT can be used to control actuators such as stepper motors and relays. This book is a unique resource for understanding practical uses of the NB-IoT technology and serves as a handbook for technical and non-technical readers who are looking for practicing and exercising the cellular NB-IoT technology. The book can be used by engineers students researchers system integrators mobile operators’ technical staff and electronics enthusiasts.
