Genomes 5

Genomes 5

Genomes 5 has been completely revised and updated. It is a thoroughly modern textbook about genomes and how they are investigated. As with previous Genomes editions techniques come first then genome anatomies followed by genome function and finally genome evolution. The genomes of all types of organism are covered: viruses bacteria fungi plants and animals including humans and other hominids. Genome sequencing and assembly methods have been thoroughly revised to include new developments in long-read DNA sequencing. Coverage of genome annotation emphasizes genome-wide RNA mapping with CRISPR-Cas 9 and GWAS methods of determining gene function covered. The knowledge gained from these techniques forms the basis of the chapters that describe the three main types of genomes: eukaryotic prokaryotic (including eukaryotic organelles) and viral (including mobile genetic elements). Coverage of genome expression and replication is truly genomic concentrating on the genome-wide implications of DNA packaging epigenome modifications DNA-binding proteins non-coding RNAs regulatory genome sequences and protein-protein interactions. Also included are examples of the applications of metabolomics and systems biology. The final chapter is on genome evolution including the evolution of the epigenome using genomics to study human evolution and using population genomics to advance plant breeding. Established methods of molecular biology are included if they are still relevant today and there is always an explanation as to why the method is still important. Genomes 5 is the ideal text for upper-level courses focused on genomes and genomics. Key Features A highly accessible and well-structured book with chapters organized into four parts to aid navigation Superb artwork illustrates the key concepts and mechanisms Each chapter has a set of short-answer questions and in-depth problems to test the reader’s understanding of the material Thoroughly up to date with references to the latest research from the 2020s

Evolution and Speciation in Plants

Evolution and Speciation in Plants

Plants are autotrophs and sessile while animals are heterotrophs and motile. Sessility has imposed on plants 94% hermaphroditism 23% selfing 3% polyploidization and 39% clonality in comparison to < 5% herma-phroditism < 1% selfing and 2% clonality in motile animals. Whereas plants consist of 374 000 species but 1 664 variety/species animals comprise 1 543 196 species and 210 variety/species. Hence plants have undergone variety diversity while animals have species diversity. In animals and plants the species ratio is reduced from 4. 1 animals : 1. 0 plant to 1. 4 for pollinating animals : 1. 0 pollinated plants. In pollination animals are benefited dietarily but plants are cross pollinated generating new gene combinations – the raw material for evolution and speciation. For the reduced species diversity in plants reasons are traced to 90% hermaphroditism ~ 23% selfing and 39% clonality. Clonality decreases from 100% in 6-7 tissue typed sponges and 3 tissue typed algae drastically to 0. 7% in 60 tissue typed worms but gradually to ~ 23% in 60 tissued typed angiosperms. About 12-15 5-8 and 77-80% of all animal and plant species are distributed in marine freshwater and terrestrial habitats respectively. Animals have conserved the ‘right’ sequence of gametogenesis but plants have gone through a ‘wrong’ sequence prior to settling with right one albeit with double fertilization in angiosperms. Both animals and plants are 80% male heterogametics. Only 0. 5% of them can afford semelparity. While 20 and 57% angiosperms are perennial trees and herbs annual herbs make up 23% only. In all of them 85 > 19 and < 1% are pollinated by fast flying animals wind and water respectively. Increasing pollen load enhances fruit- and seed-set. In contrast to animals the life cycle of plants is direct but complicated. Unlike animals plants have greatly contributed to weathering of rocks and the atmospheric gas composition during the geological past. From dormant spores and seeds of plants life can be restored after thousands of years. | Evolution and Speciation in Plants

Human-Wildlife Interactions From Conflict to Coexistence

Human-Wildlife Interactions From Conflict to Coexistence

This book won the 2023 The Wildlife Society Publication Award in the authored book category. Human-wildlife interactions increase exponentially as more and more humans and wildlife crowd into the same limited space. Such interactions often become conflicts when wildlife threaten human health and safety well-being or the food supply. This second edition of Human-Wildlife Interactions: From Conflict to Coexistence provides a comprehensive review of the severity of these problems and the methods used to resolve clashes between humans and wildlife. During his forty-year career as a wildlife professor and scientist Dr. Michael Conover founder of journal Human-Wildlife Interactions has become a recognized leader of the scientific field of human-wildlife interactions. In this book he presents the range of methods for wildlife damage management including employing lethal methods; distributing supplemental food; changing the behavior of either humans or wildlife; and excluding or repelling wildlife. Backed by numerous case studies and informative side bars the book documents resolutions to specific human-wildlife conflicts throughout the literature. Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations

Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations

Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations introduces the concept of limit state calculations before focusing on shallow and deep foundations. The limit state combinations of actions are examined and practical calculation models of the bearing capacity and of the settlement are presented particularly from the results of Ménard pressuremeter tests and cone penetration tests. Attention is also given to the use of numerical methods which has been developed over the past twenty years. It provides an overview of various elements of ground-structure interaction that are pertinent for a refined design of both shallow and deep foundations such as allowable displacements of structures and ground-structure couplings. This guide will be useful to practising engineers and experts in design offices contracting companies and administrations as well as students and researchers in civil engineering. Though its focus is generally on the French practice it is more widely applicable to design based on or generally in line with Eurocode 7 with references to BS ENs. Roger Frank is an Honorary Professor at Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (ENPC). From 1998 to 2004 he chaired the committee on Eurocode 7 on Geotechnical design.
