Scholars increasingly view the arts, creativity, and the creative economy as engines for regenerating global citizenship, renewing decayed local economies, and nurturing a new type of all-inclusive politics. Dia Da Costa delves into the global development, nationalist and leftist/progressive histories shaping these ideas with a critical ethnography of two activist performance groups in India: the Communist-affiliated Jana Natya Manch, and Budhan Theatre, a community-based group of the indigenous Chhara people. As Da Costa shows, commodification, heritage, and management discussions inevitably creep into performance. Yet the ability of performance to undermine such subtle invasions make activist theater a crucial site for considering what counts as creativity in the cultural politics of creative economy. Da Costa explores the precarious lives, livelihoods, and ideologies at the intersection of heritage projects, planning discourse, and activist performance. By analyzing the creators, performers, and activists involved--individuals at the margins of creative economy as well as society--Da Costa builds a provocative argument. Their creative economy practices may survive, challenge, and even reinforce the economies of death, displacement, and divisiveness used by the urban poor to survive.

The story of the lonely island of Tristan da Cunha is one of enduring interest. It was discovered in 1506 by the Portuguese when sailing to India. In the following century the Dutch and English considered the possibilities of industrialization and colonization of the island. French explorers and American adventurers in the eighteenth-century paid visits of varying duration. After the military occupation by England from 1816 to 1817, the real colonization of Tristan da Cunha began with the foundation of the Scotsman Corporal William Glass and his family, and two Englishmen, of a communist community in the principal island. Later they were joined by more Englishmen, then two Americans, two Italians, a Dane, and a Dutchman. Several of them left sooner or later through disappointment. The women on the island were mostly mulattos from St. Helena. When the pioneer and headman, William Glass, died in 1853, the Dutchman, Peter Green, became the leader of the small community. During the latter’s life the island was reunited with the British Empire (1876). Peter Green died in 1902 at the advanced age of 94. First published in 1940, Tristan da Cunha is a well-documented book on the island, giving much more of the historical side than many recent books have done. It is a story of profound human interest.

Although Alexander the Great never saw the Ganges, he conceived of it as a flowing body of water, with sources, destinations, and banks that marked the separation of land from water. With some printed catalogues such as the British Library and Christ Church, Oxford, now nearly 100 years old, this new and comprehensive study will be an invaluable tool for future research.

In 1933, Shih-I Hsiung (1902-1991), a student from China, met with Allardyce Nicoll, a Shakespearean scholar at the University of London, to discuss his Ph.D. study in English drama. After learning about Hsiung’s interest and background, Nicoll suggested that he should consider studying Chinese drama for his dissertation or writing a play of a Chinese subject instead. Hsiung took the advice to heart and set out to write Lady Precious Stream, a play based on a classical Beijing opera. In six weeks, the writing was completed; six months later, the manuscript was accepted for publication by Methuen; and not long after, Little Theater in London agreed to produce the play, which ran for 900 successive shows. The phenomenal success turned Hsiung into stardom all at once: he became the first Chinese to write and direct a West End play in England; in 1936, the play had its Broadway premiere and subsequent performances in Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, and other U.S. cities; and it has been produced and staged in Europe, America, South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia ever since. Following the success of Lady PreciousStream, Hsiung translated into English the Chinese classic The Romance of the Western Chamber; in addition, he wrote the play The Professor from Peking, the novel The Bridge of Heaven, and the biography The Life of Chiang Kai-shek, all in English. Shih-I Hsiung: A Glorious Showman unfolds the transnational and transcultural life experience of an extraordinary showman: a literary master, a theatre man, and a social actor bold and impassioned on socio-cultural stages. Hsiung introduced English and American literature to readers in China through his translation works in the 1920s and 1930s. Since1933, he began writing in English for audiences not familiar with the Chinese culture. His works were known for their originality, humor, and a deep sense of cultural and historical engagement. Later in his life when he was residing in Hong Kong, he was devoted to education and was also active in Chinese literary and theatre circles.
