Decaisnea Fargesii Blue Bean Shrub for Sale Online UK

Decaisnea Fargesii Blue Bean Shrub for Sale Online UK

Decaisnea Fargesii is more commonly known as the Blue Bean Shrub due to its long blue fruits that resemble bean pods. This slow growing deciduous shrub is an unusual and interesting plant that makes a great gift for gardeners who have everything. A native to eastern Asia, Decaisnea Fargesii is a large but slow growing shrub that holds upright stems of dark divided leaves which are often tinged with blue. The individual leaves can measure up to 90cm in length before turning a rich yellow shade in autumn before they fall. Its flowers are long green sepals, with no petals, that hang in panicles up to 45cm long and smell faintly sweet in the evenings – a good source of food for moths. The leaves and flowers of Blue Bean Shrub are something out of the ordinary, but gardeners mainly grow this shrub for the spectacular fruits that resemble blue broad bean pods and measure up to 10cm long. They will often hang in groups of three, and are considered a delicacy in regions of Asia and India. How Hardy Is Decaisnea Fargesii? This plant is fully hardy but needs protection from cold, drying winds in more northerly areas. How To Use Decaisnea FargesiiThis is a large bush, so it will need space to spread. At its tallest point Blue Bean Shrub can reach up to eight metres in height and the same in width, but this will take up to 20 years. You can prune back growth each year to keep it a manageable size. Due to its sizable nature this plant is best situated at the back of a border with room to grow. It is great in an unusual tree collection or as a stand-alone specimen. If you prefer, Blue Bean Shrub can be kept in a well-watered but free-draining container which will restrict its size. How To Care For Decaisnea FargesiiDecaisnea Fargesii grows best in moist environments, but it doesn’t like waterlogged conditions. It fares best in consistently damp soil, and will struggle to fruit in a dry spot. Any type of soil ph is suitable, but it’s best grown in a sheltered spot which is protected from cold winds to encourage the fruiting. This is a really unusual shrub for a gardener who has everything because it’s a real showstopper when the fruit appears. If you want an interesting shrub for the later summer and autumn months Decaisnea Fargesii is sure to boost the wow factor of your garden.

Clematis x Cartmanii Avalanche Evergreen variety of Clematis

Clematis x Cartmanii Avalanche Evergreen variety of Clematis

Clematis x Cartmanii Avalanche is a stunning early-blooming, evergreen variety of white-flowering clematis which will light up your garden in early spring with its abundant blooms. It has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit for the qualities that make it a great choice for UK gardeners.Developed in the 1990’s here in the UK, this hybrid evergreen clematis will bring beauty to your garden year-round. In early to mid-spring the dark-green glossy, leathery leaves are almost hidden by the masses of fragrant bright white blooms with yellow centres, up to 4 cm across, which cover the vines. After the flowers are finished, the deeply dissected, evergreen leaves provide a pleasant contrast to the purple stems. The parsley-shaped leaves remain through the winter, giving a welcome note of green. Clematis x cartmanii Avalanche is winter-hardy in most parts of the UK, and after 5 to 10 years will have reached its mature height and spread of 1.5-2.5 metres. Prune after blooming. Clematis x cartmanii Avalanche blooms on last year’s wood so do not prune in mid-winter. If it is overgrown, cutting the entire plant back to the base will result in fresh, vigorous growth. Clematis x cartmanii Avalanche, like all clematis, grows best with its roots in the shade and top in the sun.  It will need moist, well-drained chalk, loam or sandy soil. Plant it in a south, east or north facing aspect in a sheltered or exposed position. Clematis x cartmanii Avalanche is susceptible to few insect pests and diseases. Clematis x cartmanii Avalanche can be used in a variety of settings in your garden. It makes a lovely conservatory vine, and can be grown in a container on a rooftop terrace, patio, or balcony, where it can be trained up a sturdy trellis as a year-round privacy screen. Clematis x cartmanii Avalanche can also be trained up a pillar shape for a focal point in a formal setting, or trained over a garden arch. It would also make a beautiful covering for a courtyard wall. In a less formal country garden, Clematis x cartmanii Avalanche can be grown as a ground cover, scrambling over rocks or spilling down a slope, where it will look like an avalanche in spring! It is an excellent choice for a country cottage garden, covering a wall or trained above a window for a living frame of greenery and blossoms. This evergreen variety of Clematis, Avalanche is a low-maintenance evergreen vine with the added bonus of a spectacular spring show of pure-white blossoms. This show-stopper of a clematis deserves a spot in your garden!

Humulus Lupulus or Common Hop Native Deciduous Climber

Humulus Lupulus or Common Hop Native Deciduous Climber

Humulus Lupulus or Common HopHumulus Lupulus is our familiar Common Hop. Grown over a trellis or twined in a hedgerow it’s an unusual alternative to honeysuckle or clematis. The Common Hop is well known as the ingredient that gives beer its bitter taste and as a sleep aid to combat anxiety, but it’s also a pretty, deciduous climber for the garden.Common hops have long, twining stems that reach up to six metres and sprout large amounts of green lobed and coarsely toothed leaves in early spring. Each leaf is particularly large measuring up to 15 cms in length. During late summer female hop flowers bloom in cone-shaped yellowy-green clusters all along the thin strong stems. It's these female flowers that develop into fruits that are called ‘hops’and used for brewing. During the winter months, common hops die down to the ground and will regrow the following spring.Height And Spread of Humulus Lupulus                                                                 Common Hops is a long and thin climber that will reach up to 6 metres and spread over 1.5-2 metres. It needs support to clamber up such as a trellis or obelisk as it doesn’t have suckers or tendrils. How Hardy Is Humulus LupulusCommon hops are native to the UK and Europe so they are able to withstand our sub-zero winters if they are planted in well-drained soil. Once established, common hops are relatively pest-free and give enough twining support are hardy enough to leave to their own devices. How To Use Humulus LupulusCommon hops are a great alternative to clematis, honeysuckle and jasmine particularly if your soil is less than perfect. Hops look bright and fresh growing over an archway and scrambling their way through a hedge. Their flexible stems are perfect to twine into a fence line and give summer cover to a seating area without destroying the lawn, and because their flowers arrive in late summer pairing common hops with an early flowering clematis provides an extended flowering season.A good choice for a wildlife garden too as pollinators enjoy the hop flowers and cover provided by its large shady leaves.  How To Care For Humulus LupulusCommon hops are hardy but prefer a sheltered position and lots of sun. It will tolerate partial shade but a great flower display is achieved in a sunny spot. Ensure the ground doesn’t dry out and tie back stems to the support as hops lack suckers or tendrils – it is a ‘bine rather than a ‘vine’. In winter when the foliage has fallen, cut common hops back to root level and wait for it to re-emerge in the spring.

Actinidia Kolomikta Climber. Actinidia Kolomikta for Sale

Actinidia Kolomikta Climber. Actinidia Kolomikta for Sale

The Actinidia Kolomikta climber will bring not only the fragrance of its flowers to your garden, but most notably the striking variations of colour on the leaves will contribute considerable visual interest. It has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit for these desirable qualities.  Native to eastern Asia, the Actinidia Kolomikta Climber has been grown in the UK since the 1870’s, and is a favourite of gardeners for its variegated foliage. The heart-shaped, 15 cm long leaves are a deep purplish-green when they emerge in spring, and then turn a medium green, developing irregular patterns of silver white and then pink. Some leaves will turn completely pink, while others just have pink tips, creating an overall tapestry of green, pink and silver. Small, 1 cm white flowers appear from May to July, and have a pleasant fragrance. If male and female vines are planted together, the females will produce a crop of 2.5 cm long fruits in fall, similar to kiwi. However, the colour variations that are so desirable are more notable on male plants, and Actinidia Kolomikta is often grown for ornamental purposes only.Hardy in most parts of the UK, Actinidia Kolomikta will quickly climb up a wall or trellis to a final height and spread of 4-8 metres in 5 to 10 years. Prune in late winter to remove dead wood and shape the vine. It will need a trellis to wrap its stems around, and some stems will need to be tied to supports. Plant your Actinidia Kolomikta in full sun for best foliage colour, in a sheltered, south-facing exposure, in any well-drained fertile soil, preferably with a slightly acid to neutral ph. It is not susceptible to pests or diseases, but cats are even more attracted to it than to catmint, so make sure that young leaves are protected!Actinidia Kolomikta Climber will look stunning when allowed to spread out against an old brick wall, or when trained up into the crown of a tree. Its vigorous growth and dense foliage also make it a great choice for growing up and across an arbour or pergola, where its colourful foliage display and fragrant flowers will be much appreciated. Actinidia Kolomikta is a very desirable landscape plant, especially for its spectacularly coloured foliage. The green, pink and silver variegated leaves will create a striking display all through the season!

Honey Locust Sunburst Tree. Gleditsia Triacanthos Sunburst

Honey Locust Sunburst Tree. Gleditsia Triacanthos Sunburst

Gleditsia Triacanthos Sunburst or Honey Locust Sunburst TreeThe Honey Locust Sunburst (Gleditsia triacanthos) is coveted by many gardeners over other locust trees because of its absence of messy fruit pods. A popular honey locust cultivar, in the mid-to late spring months the tree starts to produce eye-catching feathery yellow foliage which quickly turns to a soft, attractive greenish-yellow shade. The tree’s leaves are delicate and appear to flutter as the breeze catches them. Many people also enjoy the soft rustling sound of the tree’s lightweight foliage makes as the air flows around them.  The leaves are fernlike in appearance and very delicate with a fine texture. They measure up to 20 centimeters in length. During the summer months, the Honey Locust Sunburst tree does produce flowers but they are barely noticeable. However, the flowers do emit a subtle fragrance that attracts bees to the garden and many people enjoy its light sweet scent. Gleditsia Triacanthos Sunburst has a branching growth habit that is light and airy. The combination of dainty branches and feathery foliage helps create a dappled shade beneath the tree that many gardeners appreciate. The light shade allows grass and other garden plants to grow well underneath the tree.Unlike other Honey Locust tree varieties, the Honey Locust Sunburst does not have thorns. It is a tough little tree that tolerates a wide range of soils and garden conditions. However, it grows best in soil that has a neutral pH balance. It flourishes well in full sun or partial shade, but prefers full sunlight for optimum autumn colours. The tree isn’t overly picky about soil and once established can withstand periods of drought. The Honey Locust Sunburst grows rapidly which makes it a popular tree choice. The Honey Locust Sunburst grows to a height of up to 12 meters. Its canopy width can also reach up to 12 meters. The tree’s branches grow in a very distinctive horizontal fashion which gives it a zig-zag look that is exceptionally unique compared to other trees. In the autumn, the tree’s compound leaves produce a brilliant yellow colour that is eye-catching and stands out in the landscape.

They’re borne across the whole vine in May and early June in a bright splash of white that attracts lots of bees and butterflies. Occasional flowers may appear later in the year. Its foliage appears before the flowers. The trifoliate leaves are dark green with purple tinges and they remain on the vine until the autumn frosts. This is a popular choice to cover walls, unsightly sheds, or dead trees. When planting, keep it at least a foot away from the wall so rain can reach its roots and give it strong wire support to cling to.In low-maintenance gardens you can leave it to grow, but in most cases when it’s left unpruned it can turn into a tangle of stems with no foliage or flowers near the base. If it becomes overgrown, prune it immediately after flowering cutting back to a healthy pair of buds.In very overgrown specimens, you can shear off the mass of vines to a few feet, leaving four to five stems that will reshoot healthier and stronger than before.Water Clematis Grandiflora well until it’s established and apply a thick layer of well-rotted organic mulch to the roots in early spring.

Stewartia Pseudocamellia Japanese Camellia Deciduous Camellia

Stewartia Pseudocamellia Japanese Camellia Deciduous Camellia

Stewartia Pseudocamellia has many names including the Japanese Camellia, Deciduous Camellia and Japanese Stewartia. This is an attractive, deciduous, ornamental shrub or tree. Left to its own devices, it has a naturally rounded habit and grows slowly into a small, multi-stem deciduous tree. It owes its name – Pseudocamellia – to its showy white flowers. These camellia-like flowers are up to 8 cm wide, with five white petals with orange anthers at the centre. The flowers are round and flat and are produced in summer, generally from June right up until the end of August.Stewartia Pseudocamellia has highly decorative foliage. Emerging new foliage each spring is purple, maturing over the summer to rich green and then finally to fiery red or orange (depending on conditions) in autumn before dropping its leaves. The Deciduous Camellia has quite a striking bark that peels to display a mottled mixture of creams and browns, rather resembling marble. This is best observed during the winter months and early spring. The Japanese Camellia is very hardy if it is kept out of drying winds. Magnolia Butterflies. Yellow Magnolias Buy Online UK

Magnolia Butterflies. Yellow Magnolias Buy Online UK

Magnolia Butterflies is a cross between Magnolia Acuminata and Magnolia Denudata to create a true yellow flowering Magnolia. This beautiful specimen usually forms as a small tree. With striking, primrose yellow blossoms and a compact, pyramidal form, this ornamental tree is an excellent candidate for a specimen tree.Same as its close relatives from the Magnolia family, the Butterfly variety is grown for its gorgeous, fragranced blossoms. It has yellow, loosely star-shaped scented flowers that appear in March to April, well before the leaves emerge, giving a fabulous display. The upright, non-fading blossoms of Magnolia Butterflies have a pleasant, citrus scent, and look particularly elegant and graceful against bare branches. After the abundant flowering season ends, elliptic, dark green leaves unfold, providing interest through to autumn.Although Butterfly Magnolia appears delicate, this elegant deciduous tree is actually quite robust. It can survive temperatures as low as -20 degrees, and it’s fully hardy in Britain and Ireland. However, this cultivar appreciates a sheltered position, as late frosts or strong winds might damage the flower buds. Growing Tip: Magnolia Butterflies prefers a well drained acidic soil, can grow up to  4-5m tall and 4-5m wide. Adaptable to clay and sandy soils, as long as the soil is not overly wet. It will thrive in full sun or partial shade and is full hardy.Even though it can be grown as a multi-stemmed shrub, Butterfly Magnolia is at its best when cultivated as an ornamental tree, with a single trunk and a pyramidal crown. To ensure that this ornamental tree is in great shape, prune regularly in mid-summer to early autumn, to avoid bleeding of the sap. To restrain the size of this cultivar, thin out the shoots every few years, and routinely remove watershoots and dead or damaged stems. As it’s virtually impossible to remain indifferent to Magnolia Butterflies in full bloom, this striking tree is often a choice for a statement or a focal plant. The canary yellow, goblet-shaped flowers that envelop the bare branches of this cultivar brighten up the garden, especially if planted in a partially shaded corner. Combine Butterfly Magnolia with other acid-loving plants, such as azaleas and rhododendrons. Or, for a particularly dramatic effect, pink flowering varieties of Magnolia such as Magnolia Soulangeana Satisfaction.

Mespilus Germanica Common Medlar Fruit Tree for Sale Online

Mespilus Germanica Common Medlar Fruit Tree for Sale Online

Mespilus Germanica or Common MedlarA member of the rose family, Mespilus Germanica, also known as Common Medlar, is a deciduous, ornamental fruit tree with a long history. This trouble-free tree has been cultivated throughout Europe for over 3,000 years, but it seems that these days it’s been unjustly forgotten. However, because of its attractive features, interesting edible fruit, and incredible resilience, Common Medlar is becoming popular again. A small tree with an umbrella-shaped crown, Common Medlar blossoms in late spring to early summer. The profusion of large, pure white flowers akin to wild roses looks striking framed by attractive foliage. The leaves of Common Medlar are toothed, oblong, with a hairy underside, medium green turning to striking shades of golden yellow and brown in the autumn. The self-fertile, five-petaled flowers are followed by edible fruit. Small and brown, Medlar fruit is both decorative and tasty. Although hard and inedible if picked too early, the fruit is quite delicious when fully ripe. The creamy texture and a flavour that’s similar to applesauce are achieved by leaving the picked fruit to soften for a few weeks, a process known as bletting.  Adaptable and sturdy, Common Medlar tolerates most soils, but prefers well-drained, fertile soil. It will thrive in a sunny location, sheltered from strong winds, but it can be grown in partial shade as well. Easy to grow and to care for, Common Medlar is pest and disease free. This long-lived tree can grow to be 4 to 8 metres high and across when mature, but it takes a few decades for it to achieve its ultimate height. Most specimens, however, remain relatively small, around 2 to 3 meters tall. Native to Europe and Asia, this ancient cultivar is fully hardy in Britain and Ireland. It won’t be bothered by severe winters or need sheltering when the temperatures drop below zero. As a matter of fact, the Medlar fruit benefits if it is harvested just after the first frost, as it speeds up the softening process. Self-pollinating and compact when fully established, Common Medlar is an ideal tree for small gardens. It won’t take up much space, and it provides year-round interest to the garden, with generous summer bloom, good autumn colour and unusual fruit that adorns bare branches as winter approaches. We have many more ornamental trees on offer and an ever growing selection of fruit trees, all of which are for sale online with UK and Ireland delivery.

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. Vitis Vinifera Blanc Climber

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. Vitis Vinifera Blanc Climber

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, or Vitis Vinifera Blanc, is one of the oldest wine grape varieties. Still grown today, this grape vine is an interesting and fruitful addition to your garden.Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains originated in the Mediterranean region in the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans. It is a popular white wine grape variety in France and Germany. This climbing vine produces an early crop of bunches of small, round, fragrant fruit which can be used as table grapes or in wine-making. At maturity they will be golden yellow or light brown. The young leaves are bronze-red and shiny when they emerge in spring, turning a medium green and then brown before falling in late autumn. Vitis Vinifera Blanc is winter hardy in most of the UK, and will grow vigorously with some support. It can extend up to a metre in its first year. Like all grape varieties it will respond to pruning with increased fruit production. In the first year restrict the growth to one main stem, pinching out side shoots at one leaf. Cut the vine back to three buds when winter comes, and in the second year let 2 shoots grow. Do not allow the vine to fruit until the third year, when you can let 2 lateral shoots produce 6 buds each, growing up into shoots which will produce fruit. In future years, do the same with the two strongest shoots, cutting away the rest, and let 8-10 buds each grow upwards and produce bunches of highly fragrant, delicious grapes. Our vines are between 5-7 years old, plant vines 1.5 metres apart. Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grows best in full sun in moist, freely draining fertile loam or clay soil with a neutral ph. They do not do well in sandy soil. They will need a sheltered location as their early-setting buds are vulnerable to a late frost. Since all grape varieties need to be trellised, Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains is a natural choice for training on a south-facing wall where it will receive the protection it needs, as well as creating interest with its vine structure, leaves, and the decorative, fragrant fruit in late summer and early autumn. The heavy scent can be enjoyed when the vines are planted near a seating area. Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains has been cultivated for thousands of years, and with good reason. Its fragrant, delicious grapes are still prized today both for wine-making and fresh eating, and its vigorous vines will add interest to your garden.
