Promised Land - Roger Booth - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Promised Land opens in AD 413, centred on the Roman town of Burdigala (Bordeaux). Led by their King Athaulf, the town is occupied by the Visigoths who, for almost four decades, have travelled the Empire seeking a place to settle. Too weak to defeat the Roman Empire but too strong to be defeated themselves, the Visigoths under their previous king, Alaric, had briefly even captured Rome without resolving the stalemate over their future. In Rome the Visigoths captured the Princess Galla Placidia, half-sister to the Emperor Honorius. She has travelled with them as hostage ever since. In Burdigala there begins a relationship between Roman Princess and Visigoth King based on a heady cocktail of romance, political calculation and genuine idealism culminating in marriage and the birth of a son. Honorius has no children. King and Princess believe their personal union, and in time their son, will unite Romans and Visigoths so changing the then world – and, quite possibly, the world in which we live today.Except the world is not so easily changed. A Princess seldom lacks for competing suitors. And many are the men who would be King or have their son become Roman Emperor.Promised Land is a novel. The Dark Ages already throw a long shadow. Invention is necessary sometimes for the book to work and sometimes because that darkness swallowed the facts. For all that, the tale of Athaulf and Galla Placidia is a tale deserving to be told.

The Cohen family live in Austria at the time of its annexation by the Nazis. It’s a time of despair and terror. Wealthy and Jewish, they face both financial ruin and imprisonment if they don’t form a plan. In an underhanded move, they agree to hand over their extensive and much prized art collection in return for a free passage to neutral Switzerland. Underhanded because the paintings are actually fakes, painted by Anna Cohen’s talented boyfriend… Some seventy-five years later, one of the original Gauguin’s Tahitian Princess , is discovered in an old lock up in Tuscany. This presents a real problem for the art dealer who had knowingly sold the fake to a Ukrainian businessman of ill repute; particularly as his painting was now very much on display at an Impressionist exhibition. What can he do about that? Insurance investigator Roger Kirtley is present when the exhibited painting is stolen. His suspicions are raised when he notes another purported theft of the Tahitian Princess in separate location but within days of the first. Joining forces with his Italian colleague Pina, they set about investigating further. Unfortunately, this investigation is not welcomed by any involved and soon attempts are made to silence both Roger and Pina. Having previously been paralysed in an accident and now confined to a wheelchair, Roger recognises that they''re extremely vulnerable if they continue to investigate blind. If they have any hope of surviving this, they’ll have to follow the clues to drag the culprits into the light – before he and Pina are confined to the permanent dark.

Through the Third Eye - Olcay Akdeniz - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

This is a story in which authentic, historical characters meld imperceptibly into a world of fantasy. While the backdrop of the tale is the launching of the Third Crusade, all is veiled in a cloak of Middle Eastern and Mediaeval mysticism. Salem, the highly trained and intellectually advanced son of Sinbad, the sailor, leaves his home in Basra, sailing down the Tigris, and takes to sea, for the first time at the age of seventeen. He soon becomes an accomplished and inquiring navigator. Before long he realises that he has inherited exceptional powers from his grandfather. Throughout his many adventures including shipwreck and near drowning he exercises these powers in a variety of circumstances. It is a fascinating time in the history of the world, as the west explores ever further east, seeking a sea-passage, to trade with India and China. At the same time the Papist west clashes with the Islamic rule of Saladin in the Middle East. Salem becomes embroiled in both of these ventures and it is while he is crossing the Mediterranean Sea, that he encounters Princess Berengaria, on her way to Acre for her marriage to Richard Coeur de Lion. Salem and Berengaria find that they are inextricably spiritually linked and this leads them into mystical experiences that the reader can only wonder at. The story carries the flavours, scents and magical aura of the Arabian Nights woven with mystical fantasy and embroidered with a thoughtful sprinkling of philosophy.

Utterly Immoral - Simon Keable Elliott - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Utterly Immoral - Simon Keable Elliott - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

When Robert Keable’s First World War novel Simon Called Peter was published, critics called it ‘offensive’, ‘a libel’ and reeking of ‘drink and lust’. Scott Fitzgerald suggested it was ‘utterly immoral’ and referenced it in The Great Gatsby . The novel became a huge international best-seller, a Broadway play and the sequel made into a Hollywood movie. And it made its author an international celebrity. What critics did not know was that the novel, about a military chaplain and a young woman having an affair during the war, was autobiographical. Utterly Immoral tells the remarkable true story of Robert Keable. He was an up-and-coming star of his Church. Raised in Croydon by evangelical parents he became increasingly high church while studying at Cambridge and, once ordained, he travelled to Zanzibar as a missionary. Following the outbreak of the First World War, he moved to Basutoland to work as a parish priest. He travelled to France as chaplain to the black labourers of the SANLC. It was during the war that he began to lose his faith, dispirited by the appallingly treatment of his men, the horrors of the war and the implications of his secret affair with the nineteen-year-old lorry driver, Jolie Buck. Having written Simon Called Peter he left the church, and his wife, and fled to Tahiti to live in Paul Gauguin’s house. He lived the celebrity life in Tahiti, marrying a Tahitian princess, dubbed the ‘Helen of Troy of Tahiti’. The author, Robert Keable‘s grandson, has used letters, books, articles, interviews and a trip to Tahiti to produce a fascinating account of Robert Keable’s life and the story of the success of Simon Called Peter .

John F. Kennedy - Bernard A Marshall - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Two months after his twenty-first birthday, a young Harvard student arrived to join his father the American Ambassador in London. Jack, as he was known to family, had no idea how his journey to England on the eve of war would come to change and shape his life. Jack’s beloved sister Kick was presented at Court that summer and hailed by the Press as ‘most exciting debutante’ that year. She introduced her brother to a small circle of young aristocrats, all descended from families that had long ruled England. Fascinated by books on Britain’s history and tales from the Court of King Arthur, Jack felt immediately at home. The eager student from Boston was soon sharing tea with a thirteen-year-old Princess Elizabeth, partying at Blenheim Palace and speeding across Europe as the borders were closing. Amongst the last to escape Berlin he would return with a secret Embassy note predicting hostilities ‘within a week’. With sister Kick and brother Joe he raced to Parliament to see Chamberlain declare war and Churchill rise to inspire a nation in its hour of need. Jack was spell-bound. He would forge lifelong bonds of friendship sharing such dramatic times with his young aristocratic circle. This family circle, after Kick’s marriage, would then come to play an astonishing role in shaping Jack’s actions from the Cuba Missile Crisis to Berlin when the free world came close to nuclear Armageddon. In John F. Kennedy: The London Story , the author reveals the extraordinary role Britain came to play in Jack’s life. By looking at his early life, we see how he became the man to lead and inspire the free world. Ideal for any history or politics enthusiasts, or anyone with an interest in how early events shape a life.

Stay Put? Make a Move? - Thomas Nevins - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Stay Put? Make a Move? - Thomas Nevins - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Tom collaborated with his blind dog on Stay Put? Make a Move?, so his 6th book breaks all the rules. The dog suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. (They needed to keep track with numbered paragraphs. Blame the dog.) Stay Put? covers more than just their lives and their locales; this is a narrative chock-full of cocktail party historical and pop culture facts. It’s about the lives and events of the famous and less known friends, people, places and events that touched Tom’s life. How did Tom’s High School Campaign Manager stop the Florida vote recount, resulting in chicken-hearted, pig-headed, hoodwinking, papa-rebellious, childish, unapologetic (now ‘feeling comfortable’) George Bush Jr. getting elected President? And how has it affected all of us? After graduating from Cornell University, Tom worked with Japan’s two top union movement leaders, Ohta Kaoru (who invented Shunto), and Yamagishi Akira (who founded the united RENGO labour union). There he had the lucky start of developing his vision to build world economies with better woman/manpower management. After a few serious parts, Stay Put? takes on more light-hearted topics. A drive from London to Katmandu; Marilyn Monroe’s marriage in Waccabuc; departing Waccabuc to capture Benedict Arnold; other lake and mountain facts; Robert Reich leading author’s John Jay High School; an impressive 39-year-old Donald Rumsfeld; Donald Trump; Bruce Willis; Richard Gere nearby; the Salem Witch Trials; the first half-black non-native New Yorker with Manhattan to himself for 11 years before the Dutch came; the Christmas Ghost; Bill Clinton at the Kill Bill restaurant; Tom singing ‘Otoko wa Tsurai Yo’ to Tora-san; Chiang Kai-shek and a talk with Princess Diana. Stay Put? features hundreds of other true stories – many that you will know something about. Where to live? Who to live with? What to do? What to change? What to think? What stories do you have to tell? And how many changed history for all of us?
