Health and Culture - Collins O. Airhihenbuwa - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Health and Culture - Collins O. Airhihenbuwa - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Offering a trenchant analysis of the effect culture has in determining our perceptions and expectations of health care, this provocative volume challenges the traditional, westernized medical model. An insightful alternative, author Collins O. Airhihenbuwa presents the PEN-3 model based on elements of PRECEDE, health belief, and reasoned action models of health behavior. Within this framework, the author surveys such aspects of the health education as person, extended family, and neighborhood; discusses the elements that inform an educational diagnosis of health behavior, including perceptions, enablers, and nurturers; and considers the cultural appropriateness of health behavior, examining positive, negative, and existential beliefs. The work culminates in the model′s application to specific populations, from women and children of all races to subgroups within the African American community. Health and Culture provides compelling evidence of the importance of the PEN-3 model in developing sound, relevant promotional health programs. It is essential reading for professionals, researchers, and advanced students in public health, the health sciences, and ethnic studies. "This is an exciting book. It will provoke much discussion and add to the discourse on new ways of viewing the world. Author Collins O. Airhihenbuwa has done a masterful job of writing in this work. I′ll use his work in many of my classes on culture and politics." --Molefi Kete Asante, author of The Afrocentric Idea "This pathbreaking iconoclastic analysis of the relationship between health and culture provides novel insights for those concerned with health and health services both in former colonial societies and in postindustrial nations. Everyone who has confronted the issues that dissonant and `traditional′ health beliefs and practices pose to promotion of health and treatment of disease, or who is concerned that `development′ has become simply a code word for `westernization,′ should become conversant with the exciting new concepts in Health and Culture." --Victor W. The Social Meanings of Money and Property - Kenneth O. Doyle - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Social Meanings of Money and Property - Kenneth O. Doyle - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

In ′The Social Meanings of Money and Property′ Kenneth O. Doyle has produced an intriguing study that lays the groundwork for understanding the role played by money and property among individuals, groups and even nationalities. The toughminded/tender minded dichotomy presented in The Social Meanings of Money and Property can also be viewed as the Conservative/Liberal conflict. Conservatives demand self-reliance and Liberals crave nurture. The Social Meanings of Money and Property is first a psychological treatise, second it is a stimulant for complex thought. —W.J. Rayment, Conservativebookstore.com "A most important study… in the grand style of a Joseph Schumpeter…. [It] will reward both the expert and the general reader." —Matthew Lamb, Boston College "Kenneth O. Doyle′s book, The Social Meanings of Money and Property, is one of the most wide-ranging and scholarly books I have ever read. . . .The comprehensiveness of the scholarship Doyle amasses will undoubtedly stimulate scholars from a variety of disciplines to test out the implications of the model." –Wilbert J. McKeachie, University of Michigan Why would a man with more money than he could ever spend risk career, family, and freedom for a modest increase in net worth? Why would a woman who never cared at all about investments perjure herself for a better divorce settlement? Why do people of some cultures seem inclined toward economic success? What are the fundamental differences between conservatives and liberals, or capitalists and socialists? Is there any hope of rapprochement between Economic Man and Psychological Man? In this book, Professor Kenneth O. Doyle spells out a theoretical system for understanding these practical, everyday problems, using a conceptual framework for studying the social meanings of money and property. He finds fundamental meaning in the concept of talisman. We use money and property, he proposes, to protect ourselves from fears characteristic of our personalities: the fear of incompetence, the fear of abandonment, the fear of disarray, and the fear of constraint. The Social Meanings of Money and Property will be of interest to scholars and students across a number of disciplines, including, but by no means limited to, psychology, sociology, and economics.

Nautilus Gold Award Winner (Books for a Better World) in Social Sciences & Education Create inclusive, democratic classrooms that prepare knowledgeable, compassionate, and engaged global citizens. Today’s global challenges—climate change, food and water insecurity, social and economic inequality, and a global pandemic—demand that educators prepare students to become compassionate, critical thinkers who can explore alternative futures. Their own, others’, and the planet’s well-being depend on it. Worldwise Learning presents a "Pedagogy for People, Planet, and Prosperity" that supports K-8 educators in nurturing "Worldwise Learners": students who both deeply understand and purposefully act when learning about global challenges. Coupling theory with practice, this book builds educators’ understanding of how curriculum and meaningful interdisciplinary learning can be organized around local, global, and intercultural issues, and provides a detailed framework for making those issues come alive in the classroom. Richly illustrated, each innovative chapter asserts a transformational approach to teaching and learning following an original three-part inquiry cycle, and includes: - - Practical classroom strategies to implement Worldwise Learning at the lesson level, along with tips for scaffolding students’ thinking. - - Images of student work and vignettes of learning experiences that help educators visualize authentic Worldwise Learning moments. - - Stories that spotlight Worldwise Learning in action from diverse student, teacher, and organization perspectives. - - An exemplar unit plan that illustrates how the planning process links to and can support teaching and learning about global challenges. - - QR codes that link to additional lesson and unit plans, educational resources, videos of strategies, and interviews with educators and thought leaders on a companion website, where teachers can discuss topics and share ideas with each other. - Worldwise Learning turns students into local and global citizens who feel genuine concern for the world around them, living their learning with intention and purpose. The time is now.

Legitimacy in Public Administration - O . C. Mcswite - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Legitimacy in Public Administration - O . C. Mcswite - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

In this "postmodern, end-of-the-century" moment, the question of what role public administration can legitimately play in a democratic society has deepened and taken on increased urgency. At the same time the movement toward global marketization has gained enormous momentum, traditional prejudices and racial and ethnic violence have appeared with a renewed virulence, presenting unprecedented challenges to democratic governments. Legitimacy in Public Administration reveals how the issue of administrative legitimacy is directly implicated, indeed central, to this broader issue. It argues that legitimacy hinges at the generic level on the question of alterityùhow to regard and relate to "different others." This book reviews the history of the legitimacy issue in the literature of American public administration with the purpose of demonstrating that this discourse has been distorted by an underlying and undisclosed commitment to an elitist "Man of Reason" model of the public administratorÆs role. Current attempts to reformulate administration to meet the challenge of new conditions will fail, the author argues, because they have not escaped the grip of this implicit distortion. Legitimacy in Public Administration includes a challenging concluding chapter that uses insights from gender theory and demonstrates the connection between the legitimacy question and the critical problem of alterity. The author also offers a new way to fundamentally reframe the legitimacy question, so as not only to help the field of public administration resolve it, but to show how this resolution can create a new understanding of the problem of racial and ethnic prejudice.
