Effective Advertising - Gerard J. Tellis - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Recently nominated one of five finalists selected for the 2005 Berry-AMA Book Prize for best book in marketing! "Tellis has done a remarkable job. He has brought together an amazingly diverse literature. Unlike some other sources that claim to be able to measure the effects of advertising, Tellis′s thoroughness and ability to understand and convey results of various experiments and statistical analyses helps the reader to separate the wheat from the chaff. Any student of advertising, whether new to the field or a seasoned veteran executive or researcher, should read this book." --Alan G. Sawyer, University of Florida Effective Advertising: How, When, and Why Advertising Works reviews and summarizes an extensive body of research on advertising effectiveness. In particular, it summarizes what we know today on when, how, and why advertising works. The primary focus of the book is on the instantaneous and carryover effects of advertising on consumer choice, sales, and market share. In addition, the book reviews research on the rich variety of ad appeals, and suggests which appeals work, and when, how, and why they work. The first comprehensive book on advertising effectiveness, Understanding Effective Advertising reviews over 50 years of research in the fields of advertising, marketing, consumer behavior, and psychology. It covers all aspects of advertising and its effect on sales, including sales elasticity, carryover effects, content effects, and effects of frequency. Author Gerard J. Tellis distills three decades of academic and professional experience into one volume that successfully dismisses many popular myths about advertising, such as:* Advertising has a powerful influence on consumers and often generates consumer need * The effects of advertising persist for decades * If an ad fails initially, repetition will ensure its ultimate success * Ads need only one to three exposures to succeed * Advertising by argument is the most effective method * The best ads are unique and original * Advertising is very profitable Tellis then provides alternatives and establishes the following truths about advertising: * Advertising is vitally important for free markets, but its action is subtle and its discovery is fragile * The effects of advertising are short-lived * If ads are not initially effective, repetition will not make them more effective * Scientific principles can show which ads work, though firms often ignore advertising research and persist with ineffective ads * Advertising by emotion may have the most effective appeal * Templates can yield very effective ads * Advertising is often unprofitable Effective Advertising will be an important addition to courses at the graduate or undergraduate level in advertising, marketing, communication, and journalism. It will also be an invaluable reference for professionals and researchers working in these fields.

Transportation Planning on Trial - Martin Wachs - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Transportation Planning on Trial - Martin Wachs - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Authors′ ad copy***Use whenever possible*** The Clean Air Act of 1991 and the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1994 require that metropolitan transportation planning agencies give high priority to the improvement of air quality. Under these laws, transportation planners must design regional highway and transit systems that contribute substantially to the attainment of federal air quality standards. This new requirement reveals important limitations to the standard methods by which transportation planners do their work. The mathematical models and statistical techniques used by transportation planners appear to be inadequate to enable them to analyze the air quality implications of alternative transportation plans. This was the situation when a group of environmental organizations brought suit in federal district court alleging that the Metropolitan Transportation Commission in the San Francisco Bay area had violated requirements of these laws in its transportation planning and highway funding activities. This volume provides an account of the legal dispute that pitted environmentalists against regional transportation planners, and which demonstrated that regional transportation planning methods are in need of substantial improvement. This monograph should be of interest to urban planners, environmentalists, public policy analysts, and those who apply mathematical modeling and statistical analysis to questions of public policy. The authors--an attorney and a transportation planner who took part in the lawsuit--analyze the specific arguments made by both sides in this important legal action, and draw from the specific case broader conclusions about the role of technical analysis in public policy making. *************************************************************** Urban planning does not and cannot exist in isolation--there are a large number of external factors that impact on a planner′s work including politics and the planning commission; environmental impact studies; and national, state, and local legislation. Focusing on the interrelations between federal legislation, the judicial process, and transportation planning, Transportation Planning on Trial examines the interaction between regional transportation planning and environmental, particularly air, quality. This unique volume is designed to help urban planners understand the legal restrictions and requirements that directly impact how they operate. It considers two recent federal legislation pieces--the Clean Air Act of 1990 and the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991--that mark the most important landmarks in a decade-long shift in emphasis in regional transportation planning. This groundbreaking volume will be vitally important to transportation planners, students of urban and transportation planning, transportation policymakers, environmentalists and environmental lawyers.

The Nature of Nurture - Theodore D. Wachs - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Nature of Nurture - Theodore D. Wachs - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Are there certain periods in a child′s development when he or she may be more sensitive to specific environmental influences than at earlier or later times? Are preschool teachers equally nurturant to securely attached versus insecurely attached children? Are girls more sensitive than boys to parental maltreatment? Designed to synthesize what we know about the nature of environmental influences (nurture) upon development, Wachs artfully explores whether development depends upon a sole factor--the rearing environment, genetics, nutrition, or individual characteristics-- or, whether the degree of directional consistency combined with the extent of covariance among these factors may have the most developmental impact. Issues such as how individuals respond differently to stress, medical treatment, parenting styles, teaching approaches and daycare centers are all discussed through careful analysis of research and theories from a variety of fields. Researchers, teachers, and intervention specialists of developmental psychology, family studies, social psychology, education, and nursing will find The Nature of Nurture an inspiration to further examine how environmental systems determine variability in developmental outcomes and what can be done to promote optimal outcomes for individual children. USE IN NEXT AD (2/1/94): "In The Nature of Nurture Wachs does precisely what he intends to do. He lays out clearly and thoroughly what we know and do not know about environmental influences on human development, and he builds on the conceptual and empirical work of others to move research on environmental effects forward in productive and exciting ways. . . . [It] should serve as a bible for future research on the environment and development. As such, it is a must read for developmental psychologists from all specialty areas, to graduate students, and to upper level undergraduates. This is an eminently readable and important book." --Contemporary Psychology "The Nature of Nurture provides a thorough and thoughtful review and analysis of state-of-the-art theory, concepts, and evidence pertaining to the effect of the environment on human development. Especially important is the attention the author pays to the multidimensional nature of the environment, to individual differences among children, and to the need to consider both of these domains of complexity for understanding the development of specific aspects of psychological and behavioral functioning." --Jay Belsky, The Pennsylvania State University "The Nature of Nurture provides extended treatments of issues rarely dealt with in detail, including organism-environment covariance and organism-environment interaction. All in all, this is an excellent choice for those interested in studying complex, dynamic interplay of organism and environment. It deals with a number of critical design and theory issues; and it ends with a hybrid ecological developmental model designed to integrate studies of experience and offers a useful discussion of future trends in an emerging area of developmental studies." --Child Development Abstracts & Bibliography

Social Cognition and Individual Change - Paula S. Nurius - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Social Cognition and Individual Change - Paula S. Nurius - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Use the following for Social Work catalogs: Social Cognition and Individual Change provides a much needed link among several perspectives in social work practice (such as the ecological or generalist model) and the myriad of atheoretical "techniques" that social work practitioners must choose from. This new social work practice book makes more concrete and practical the basic premises of "person-environment interaction" and ′starting where the client is." It details the processes through which people perceive and interpret the social world, how problems arise, and how understanding these processes can significantly sharpen our assessments, intervention planning, goal selection, and evaluation. It draws upon the best up-to-date work in cognitive and emotional functioning, self-concept formation and change, and coping with stress. This book goes beyond introductory practice texts in describing how social work theory can guide practice. Special topics include clinical reasoning, the structure of memory, and social-cognitive explanations for psychodynamic phenomenon. Social Cognition and Individual Change should be included in courses for advanced practice and social work practice theory. Use this ad copy for psych: In recent years, there have been some major developments in the area of person-environment interaction--specifically the study of social cognition. Although knowledge of this literature is critical for the helping professional, social cognition in clients has been among the more difficult to adequately assess and use for intervention. Until now. Clear and succinct, Social Cognition and Individual Change offers a comprehensive introduction to a "cognitive-ecological" approach to counseling and clinical practice. To provide a solid conceptual grounding for the reader, the theoretical underpinnings of the cognitive-ecological model are described in detail, including its key components, strengths, and limitations. The model is then applied to relevant stages of practice such as assessment, goal setting, intervention planning, and evaluation. In addition, the authors provide numerous examples to illustrate how practitioners can use the model to enhance their work. Among the other topics covered are social perception and the practitioner, and feedback and follow-through. Social Cognition and Individual Change is perfectly suitable for courses on human behavior in the social environment and courses on practice methods. Human service practitioners, who would like an updated resource to fill a gap in their social psychological training, will also appreciate this volume. "The structure of this book allows one to use it for training students as well as a resource for professional practitioners. The material presented in each chapter is reinforced by the material in the succeeding chapter. The authors systematically develop the theoretical underpinnings and practice behaviors requisite for empowering clients and workers." --Families in Society Use this for social work catalog: "In this era of the cognitive revolution, books that address the use of cognitive techniques to facilitate personal change are abundant. None, however, match the conceptual depth and clarity offered by Brower and Nurius. . . . By using clear conceptual descriptions, vivid and relevant examples, step-by-step procedural guidelines, chapter introductions, and capsule summaries, Brower and Nurius deftly follow their own prescriptions about how to capture attention, prime associations, and facilitate recall." --from the foreword by Sharon B. Berlin, The University of Chicago Use this quote for Psych crowd: "Brower and Nurius have put together a valuable and practical blend of theory and research from areas of social cognition, self psychology, and counseling practice. I recommend it highly." --Michael J. Mahoney, University of North Texas
