What Causes Men's Violence Against Women? - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

What Causes Men's Violence Against Women? - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Carefully organized and tightly edited, this insightful book considers potential causes of men′s violence against women, utilizing a variety of theoretical perspectives. It summarizes what is known about the multiple causes of men′s violence against women and the importance of identifying men′s risk factors in order to prevent future violence. The editors′ approach is unique but systematic. In chapter 2, the editors present a preliminary multivariate model that explains men′s violence against women by identifying four content areas: macrosocietal, biological, gender role socialization, and relation factors. Within these four areas, the editors develop thirteen preliminary hypotheses about the causes of men′s violence against women. In the subsequent chapters the contributing authors critique or react to specific parts of the multivariate model and address one or more of the 13 hypotheses in the presentation of their own ideas about the causes of men′s violence against women. In the concluding chapter, the editors summarize the contributors′ reactions to the original hypotheses by creating a revised multivariate model of risk factors for men′s violence against women. The final model includes biological, socialization, psychological, psychosocial, relational, and macrosocietal factors. Furthermore, the model is explained through 13 theoretical propositions, 40 research hypotheses, and over 60 risk variables related to men′s violence against women. The book closes with a discussion of men′s protective, resiliency, and vulnerability factors as well as future directions for theory development, advocacy, and the prevention of violence against women.

The End of Television? - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

The End of Television? - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Is television dead? The classic television era of the 1950s and 1960s, characterized by limited choices of programs broadcast on over the air channels to families as if they were seated around a hearth – and to a nation as if gathered around a campfire – has indeed ended. That early stage of "sharedness" and "scarcity" gave way to the television of "plenty," when satellite and cable and competition reigned, choice was suddenly expanded, and every room in the home had its own television set. And now television offers infinite choices where we can view what we like; when we like; where we like; on a variety of screens, telephones, and Web sites. Some researchers assert that television is not dead but has merely moved from a "collectivist" to an "individualist" phase. Throughout the drastic evolution of this media, thousands of studies have examined the short-term effects of television, such as the evaluation of persuasion campaigns. Yet there is scant research on the overreaching sociological impacts of television and its centrality to Western culture over the past 60 years. This compelling volume of The ANNALS is the first collection of rigorous articles devoted to studying ways in which television has impacted our values, ideologies, institutions, social structure, and culture. Focusing on classic television, these leading experts in media studies delve into the effects on social institutions (namely family and politics) and its effects on values and everyday behavior. These seminal articles lay the groundwork for innovative studies of the numerous ways that television has impacted democracy; social integration (nation and family); trust and suspiciousness; materialism; and identity (social and physical). Students and researchers will find a wealth of inspiration for new research projects. It is a must-have resource for social scientists interested in media studies.

Health Policy for Health Care Professionals - Peter L. Bradshaw - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Health Policy for Health Care Professionals - Peter L. Bradshaw - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

`This excellent, concise and even-handed book confronts the contradictions and dilemmas at the heart of today′s NHS. The book is aimed at healthcare professionals and students of health policy, and covers its major themes over the past 60 years, with particular attention to Labour′s policy agenda since 1997′ - H ealthmatters Health Policy for Health Care Professionals is a contemporary guide to the health service, its origins and current agenda, which focuses on the challenges faced by health service workers in implementing government policy at local level. The book′s aim is to help health care professionals make assessments of health policy by giving them an understanding of the ideological basis of the British health care system and the challenges facing the modern National Health Service. Beginning with the development of the NHS and its place within the broader context of state welfare provision, the book looks at the options available to governments in formulating policy which responds to health needs. It examines the policies set by recent governments and the feasibility of achieving objectives set by the current NHS Plan. Looking to the future, the book also identifies key issues for health policy in the next decade. Recognizing the reality of working in today′s NHS, the authors highlight the tension which often exists between the formation and implementation of health policy. The central concern of policy makers to act for the collective good frequently creates problems for practitioners trying to align services with individual patient need and choice. Health Policy for Health Care Professionals is an ideal text for anyone training for a career in the NHS and an excellent resource for qualified practitioners assessing and implementing policy.

Reaching and Teaching All Children - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

An excellent and practical treatise on revitalizing learning in our schools. I highly reccommend its innovative and collaborative approach to education. Alvin F. Poussaint, M.D., Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School "Provoking us to ponder, the authors dare evoke values and moral imperatives as critical to the process of education. Flowing throughout the book is the mantra of inclusivity; children, families, teachers, and communities together in meeting the challenge of school change. It is a beacon of hope for public schools in America." Wendy G. Winters, Professor of Sociology, Howard University, Washington D.C. "The approach in this book makes sense to teachers, parents, and others who seek to improve conditions for learning and desire to increase student achievement." Ramon C. Cortines, Executive Director, PEW Network for Standards-Based Reform, Stanford Editors: Robert L. Sinclair, University of Massachusetts, Amherst Ward J. Ghory, Buckingham Browne & Nichols School, Cambridge, Massachusetts How can educators reach all children? Is every child teachable? These are the questions explored here. The chapter authors offer up a challenge for American educators to: * Establish a climate of trust where students are free of censure or ridicule * Raise educational expectations for (and of) of every student * Start each student on a lifelong path of continuous learning * Remove educational limits set by society--and let students achieve their real potential This book introduces the findings of the National Coalition for Equality in Learning. It involves more than 60 schools in 7 states, and was created to attack learning inequities that persist in public education. The National Coalition′s 5-year mission: to make sure that every student gets an equal chance to learn. Reaching and Teaching All Children offers these four key democratic values as educational basics: * Education as a moral imperative * Respect for individuals * Pragmatic problem solving * Local decision making The chapter authors view your leadership skills as critical to improving your school. Learn how to engage your staff in working together for schoolwide improvement. Find out how to channel teachers′ powerful leadership abilities and build effective "study teams" to solve even the toughest school or student problems. These school leadership ideas can help you create lasting, meaningful change in your school and in your classrooms. What you learn can mean the difference between status quo at your school and reaching--and teaching--all children.
