Hidden in Plain Sight - James O. Ward - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Hidden in Plain Sight: Covert Criticism of the Medici in Renaissance Florence offers the first systematic study of an important and heretofore insufficiently-studied phenomenon in Renaissance Europe. Through a close examination of a wide variety of visual and textual materials, James O. Ward illuminates the means by which Florentine citizens—among them several of the most famous artists and writers of the time, such as Michelangelo, Machiavelli, and Vasari—managed, in an increasingly authoritarian political and cultural climate, to express their disaffection with the prevailing political and cultural status quo in relatively safe ways, while at the same time maintaining contact with those rulers whom they criticized, upon whom they often depended for their livelihoods. Ward’s volume thus offers new and provocative interpretations of some of the most famous works of Italian Renaissance visual and textual culture—for example, Michelangelo’s New Sacristy in Florence, Machiavelli’s Prince , and Vasari’s portrait of Lorenzo de’ Medici—which have traditionally been viewed by scholars of the period as encomiastic celebrations of their patrons’ power and prestige. The volume thus provides—besides its intimate view of power relations between some of Florence’s most creative artists and writers and those they served—fresh perspectives on the important question of patron-artist relations during the period. Written in a style which is not too technical, the book is an ideal resource for specialists in Italian history, art history, literature, rhetoric, theatre studies, and the history of Italian academies, as well as a stimulating narrative for the educated general reader interested in the history of Florence, and its often fraught relations with its leading family, the Medici.

Border Crossing «Brothas» - Ty Ron M. O. Douglas - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Winner of the 2017 Society of Professors of Education Book Award Winner of the 2017 American Educational Studies Association Critics'' Choice Award Border Crossing «Brothas» examines how Black males form identities, define success, and utilize community-based pedagogical spaces to cross literal and figurative borders. The tragic deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Tamir Rice in Cleveland, and numerous others from Brooklyn, Britain, and Bermuda whose lives have been taken prematurely suggest that negotiating race, place, and complex space is a matter of life and death for Black males. In jurisdictions such as the U.S. and Bermuda, racial tensions are the palpable and obvious reality, yet the average citizen has no idea how to sensibly react. This book offers a reasonable response that pushes readers to account for and draw on the best of what we know, the core of who we are, and the needs and histories of those we serve. Drawing on the educational and socializing experiences of Black males in Bermuda – a beautiful yet complex island with strong connections to the U.S., England, and the Caribbean – this book offers educators and leaders new language for postcolonial possibilities and emancipatory epistemologies related to Black male identities and success in a global context. Intriguing findings and fresh frameworks grounded in understandings of race, class, ability, transnationalism, culture, colonialism, and the construction/performance of gendered identity emerge in this book.

This is the second of two collections dedicated to the Portuguese folktale in North America (Canada and Massachusetts). The present volume, which contributes to preserving an ancient, disappearing tradition, consists of 82 folktales of Indo-European character recorded in Taunton, Massachusetts. Most were told by Guilherme Alexandre da Silveira, a septuagenarian from the island of Flores, who was one the last surviving great storytellers from the Azores, and perhaps all of Europe. The tales were faithfully transcribed from recordings, including numerous archaisms, regionalisms, and some of the Anglicisms that characterize immigrant speech. The introduction, in Portuguese and English, presents an overview of Portuguese immigration to New England. Each tale is preceded by an English summary, and is classified according to Hans-Jörg Uther’s international catalog. There follow sections dedicated to the Portuguese-speaking world (Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Goa, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Timor) and the Iberian cultural area (Spain, Latin America and the Sephardim). This book, which is of great linguistic value, ends with five appendices: vocabulary, informants, motifs, and two appendices dedicated to tale types. The first classifies the stories included here; the second brings together all the tales found in the three North American collections.

(Trans)national Tsina/oys - Richie Neil Hao - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

(Trans)national Tsina/oys - Richie Neil Hao - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Chinese in the Philippines constitute one of the many Chinese communities globally. Although many Chinese have maintained their cultural traditions, most of them are Filipina/o citizens and have always considered the Philippines home. Embodying "Tsina/o" (Chinese) and "Pina/oy" (Filipina/o) identities, Tsina/oys must learn how to negotiate their hybridity through cultural and linguistic practices in everyday life. Using a multimethodological approach to ethnography (critical ethnographic interview, autoethnography, and cyberethnography), (Trans)national Tsina/oys: Hybrid Performances of Chinese and Filipina/o Identities examines Tsina/oy identity as intersectional performance of ethnicity, nationality, and class in physical and online environments. The book draws from critical intercultural and performance studies to analyze what makes "Tsina/oy" a complex identity and what it could mean for the future in and beyond the Philippines. The book is well-suited for undergraduate and graduate students and academics who study international and intercultural communication, qualitative research methods, and performance studies. It is also of great interest to scholars in anthropology, Asian American studies, cultural studies, ethnic studies, geography, liberal studies, sociology, among other disciplines. "This book is a travelogue to places and spaces of knowing the self in culture; crossing borders to different but familiar locations, and (re)discovering the socializing practices that shape culture and identity. Hao introduces us to complex ways of revisiting notions of intersectionality not just through the complex meeting places of oppressions in social contexts, but through the importance of a diasporic transnational hybridity . He eschews the notion of hybridity as just a mixture of discrete cultures, but the complex co-informing aspects of ethnicity, nationality, class, and the politics of place that shape a sense of self in relation to common origins and the performative variations of identity that are held in contradistinction to those shared roots. Using diverse and interlocking ethnographic and qualitative methodologies, (Trans)national Tsina/oys: Hybrid Performances of Chinese and Filipina/o Identities asks the reader to engage at the intersections, the hyphens, and the parenthetical constructions of hybridity that make the subjects of the study, including himself, both/and always searching for homeplace in communities of recognized co-informing identities that are at once the same and not the same." —Bryant Keith Alexander, Ph.D., Dean and Professor, College of Communication and Fine Arts, Loyola Marymount University “(Trans)national Tsina/oys: Hybrid Performances of Chinese and Filipina/o Identities stands as an exemplar of critical intercultural communication studies and the deep-level insights that it provides as a field to uncover the intricately woven layers of cultural identity, performativity, belonging, and the cultural politics that constitute ‘home.’ Dr. Hao’s book also highlights the key role that critical intercultural communication studies plays in unpacking the complex of diasporas in terms of (but not limited to) their identity dynamics, the power effects in claiming/remembering/clarifying one’s identity in relation to a ‘home’ (of memory, of place, of relational cultural space), and the thorny assemblage of meaning around ‘belonging.’” —Rona Tamiko Halualani, Ph.D., Professor of Intercultural Communication, Department of Communication Studies, San Jose State University
