Changing the Score - Hilary Poriss - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Changing the Score - Hilary Poriss - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

This study seeks to explore the role and significance of aria insertion, the practice that allowed singers to introduce music of their own choice into productions of Italian operas. Each chapter investigates the art of aria insertion during the nineteenth century from varying perspectives, beginning with an overview of the changing fortunes of the practice, followed by explorations of individual prima donnas and their relationship with particular insertion arias: Carolina Ungher''s difficulties in finding a "perfect" aria to introduce into Donizetti''s Marino Faliero; Guiditta Pasta''s performance of an aria from Pacini''s Niobe in a variety of operas, and the subsequent fortunes of that particular aria; Maria Malibran''s interpolation of Vaccai''s final scene from Giulietta e Romeo in place of Bellini''s original setting in his I Capuleti e I Montecchi; and Adelina Patti''s "mini-concerts" in the lesson scene of Il barbiere di Siviglia. The final chapter provides a treatment of a short story, "Memoir of a Song," narrated by none other than an insertion aria itself, and the volume concludes with an appendix containing the first modern addition of this short story, a narrative that has lain utterly forgotten since its publication in 1849. This book covers a wide variety of material that will be of interest to opera scholars and opera lovers alike, touching on the fluidity of the operatic work, on the reception of the singers, and on the shifting and hardening aesthetics of music criticism through the period.

The Image of Political Power in the Reign of Nerva, AD 96-98 - Nathan T. Elkins - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Image of Political Power in the Reign of Nerva, AD 96-98 - Nathan T. Elkins - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

At age 65, Nerva assumed the role of emperor of Rome; just sixteen months later, his reign ended with his death. Nerva''s short reign robbed his regime of the opportunity for the emperor''s imperial image to be defined in building or monumental art, leaving seemingly little for the art historian or archaeologist to consider. In view of this paucity, studies of Nerva primarily focus on the historical circumstances governing his reign with respect to the few relevant literary sources. The Image of Political Power in the Reign of Nerva, AD 96-98, by contrast, takes the entire imperial coinage program issued by the mint of Rome to examine the "self-representation," and, by extension, the policies and ideals of Nerva''s regime. The brevity of Nerva''s reign and the problems of retrospection caused by privileging posthumous literary sources make coinage one of the only ways of reconstructing anything of his image and ideology as it was disseminated and developed at the end of the first century during the emperors lifetime. The iconography of this coinage, and the popularity and spread of different iconographic types -- as determined by study of hoards and finds, and as targeted towards different ancient constituencies -- offers a more positive take on a little-studied emperor. Across three chapters, Elkins traces the different reverse types and how they would have resonated with their intended audiences, concluding with an examination of the parallels between text and coin iconography with previous and subsequent emperors. The Image of Political Power in the Reign of Nerva, AD 96-98 thus offers significant new perspectives on the agents behind the selection and formulation of iconography in the late first and early second century, showing how coinage can act as a visual panegyric similar to contemporary laudatory texts by tapping into how the inner circle of Nerva''s regime wished the emperor to be seen.

Political Corruption - Maria Paola (professor Ad Interim Of Political Theory And Philosophy And A Member Of The Normative Orders Research Center

Political Corruption - Maria Paola (professor Ad Interim Of Political Theory And Philosophy And A Member Of The Normative Orders Research Center

From the spread of kleptocracy in Venezuela at the expense of the country''s economy, to President Trump''s appointment of family members to high-ranking White House positions, to President Lukashenko''s desperate stranglehold on power in Belarus, across the world political corruption is rampant--indeed practically too ubiquitous to keep track of. As these examples illustrate, political corruption is often associated to a variety of instances of abuse of power that either derive from a vicious trait of individual character, or develop within deeply dysfunctional institutions. To Emanuela Ceva and Maria Paola Ferretti, however, this piecemeal view is inadequate: individual and institutional instances of political corruption have a common root that we can understand only by treating corruption and anticorruption as a matter of a public ethics of office. Political corruption is the Trojan horse that undermines public institutions from within via an interrelated action of officeholders. Even well-designed and legitimate institutions can veer off track if the officeholders fail through their conduct to uphold a public ethics of office accountability. This book offers an analytically rigorous definition of political corruption. It also investigates the common normative root of its two manifestations--corrupt individual character, and corrupt institutional mechanisms--as a relationally wrongful practice that consists of an unaccountable use of the power of office by officeholders in public institutions. From this perspective, political corruption must be understood from within, for it is an internal enemy of public institutions that can only be opposed by mobilizing the officeholders to remain accountable and mutually answerable for their conduct. In this way, anticorruption calls on the officeholders'' responsibility to work together to maintain an interactively just institutional system.

Dirty Politics - Kathleen Hall Jamieson - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Dirty Politics - Kathleen Hall Jamieson - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Americans in recent years have become thoroughly disenchanted with our political campaigns, especially with campaign advertising and speeches. Each year, as November approaches, we are bombarded with visceral appeals that bypass substance, that drape candidates in the American flag but tell us nothing about what they''ll do if elected, that flood us with images of PT-109 or Willie Horton, while significant issues--such as Kennedy''s Addison''s Disease or the looming S&L catastrophe--are left unexamined. And the press--the supposed safeguard of democracy--focuses on campaign strategy over campaign substance, leaving us to decide where the truth lies. In Dirty Politics, campaign analyst Kathleen Hall Jamieson provides an eye-opening look at political ads and speeches, showing us how to read, listen to, and watch political campaigns. Jamieson provides a sophisticated (and often humorous) analysis of advertising technique, describing how television ads use soft focus, slow motion, lyrical or patriotic music (Reagan used "I''m Proud to be an American") to place a candidate in a positive light, or quick cuts, black and white, videotape, and ominous music (for instance, the theme from "Jaws") to portray the opposition. She shows how ads sometimes mimic news spots to add authenticity (Edwin Edwards, in his race against David Duke, actually used former NBC correspondent Peter Hackis, who would begin an ad saying "This is Peter Hackis in Baton Rouge"). And Jamieson points out that consultants create inflammatory ads hoping that the major networks will pick them up and run them as news, giving the ad millions of dollars of free air time. The most striking example would be the Willie Horton ad, which the press aired repeatedly (as an example of negative advertising) long after the ad had ceased running. (In fact, it never ran on the major networks as an ad, only as news.) From a colorful, compact history of negative campaigning from Eisenhower to the present, to an in-depth commentary on the Willie Horton ads, to an up-to-the-minute analysis of the Duke-Edwards campaign in Louisiana, Dirty Politics is both a fascinating look at underhanded campaigning as well as a compelling argument for fair, accurate, and substantive campaigns. It is a book that all voters should read before they vote again.

Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia - Steven R. (professor Of Psychology Sabat - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Alzheimer''s is swiftly on the rise: it is estimated that every 67 seconds, someone develops the disease. For many, the words ''Alzheimer''s disease'' or ''dementia'' immediately denote severe mental loss and, perhaps, madness. Indeed, the vast majority of media coverage of Alzheimer''s disease (AD) and other types of dementia focuses primarily on the losses experienced by people diagnosed and the terrible burden felt by care partners yearning for a "magic bullet" drug cure.Providing an accessible, question-and-answer-format primer on what touches so many lives, and yet so few of us understand, Alzheimer''s Disease and Dementia: What Everyone Needs to Know® contributes what is urgently missing from public knowledge: unsparing investigation of their causes and manifestations, and focus on the strengths possessed by people diagnosed. Steven R. Sabat mines a large body of research to convey the genetic and biological aspects of Alzheimer''s disease, its clinical history, and, most significantly, to reveal the subjective experience of those with Alzheimer''s or dementia. By clarifying the terms surrounding dementia and Alzheimer''s, which are two distinct conditions, Sabat corrects dangerous misconceptions that plague our understanding of memory dysfunction. People diagnosed with AD retain awareness, thinking ability, and sense of self; crucially, Sabat demonstrates that there are ways to facilitate communication even when the person with AD has great difficulty finding the words he or she wants to use. From years spent exploring and observing the points of view and experiences of people diagnosed, Sabat strives to inform as well as to remind readers of the respect and empathy owed to those diagnosed and living with dementia. Alzheimer''s Disease and Dementia conveys this type of information and more, which, when applied by family and professional caregivers, will help improve the quality of life of those diagnosed as well as of those who provide support and care.
