Rebuilding War-Torn States - Graciana Del Castillo - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Rebuilding War-Torn States - Graciana Del Castillo - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Post-conflict economic reconstruction is a critical part of the political economy of peacetime and one of the most important challenges in any peace-building or state-building strategy. After wars end, countries must negotiate a multi-pronged transition to peace: Violence must give way to public security; lawlessness, political exclusion, and violation of human rights must give way to the rule of law and participatory government; ethnic, religious, ideological, or class/caste confrontation must give way to national reconciliation; and ravaged and mismanaged war economies must be reconstructed and transformed into functioning market economies that enable people to earn a decent living.Yet, how can these vitally important tasks each be successfully managed? How should we go about rehabilitating basic services and physical and human infrastructure? Which policies and institutions are necessary to reactivate the economy in the short run and ensure sustainable development in the long run? What steps should countries take to bring about national reconciliation and the consolidation of peace? In all of these cases, unless the political objectives of peacetime prevail at all times, peace will be ephemeral, while policies that pursue purely economic objectives can have tragic consequences. This book argues that any strategy for post-conflict economic reconstruction must be based on five premises and examines specific post-conflict reconstruction experiences to identify not only where these premises have been disregarded, but also where policies have worked, and the specific conditions that have influenced their success and failure.

The Dark Side of Statius' Achilleid - Dr Julene Abad Del Vecchio - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Dark Side of Statius' Achilleid - Dr Julene Abad Del Vecchio - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Dark Side of Statius'' Achilleid explores systematically and for the first time the darker aspects of Statius'' Achilleid, bringing to light the poem''s tragic and epic dimensions. By seeking to position at centre-stage these darker elements, the book offers several new readings of the Achilleid in relation to its literary inheritance, its gender dynamics, and its generic tensions. This volume delves beneath the surface of a story that ostensibly deals with a "light" subject matter-the cross-dressing of a young Achilles on Scyros-to carry out an in-depth examination of the poem''s relationship to its epic and tragic precursors, and to explore its more serious themes. In this book, the poem is shown to challenge traditional epic narratives, and to display Achilles'' complex familial relationships, as well as his transgressive and unique heroism. The Achilleid also emerges as paying distinct attention to the tragic characterization of Thetis, who attempts to halt the horrors that the cataclysmic Trojan war promises to beget.By looking into Statius'' wide-ranging dialogue with his literary predecessors, such as Homer, Sophocles, Virgil, Ovid, Lucan, and Seneca, as well as Statius'' previous epic magnum opus, the Thebaid, the multidimensional characterizations of Achilles and other key characters of the poem, such as Ulysses, Calchas, and Thetis are investigated. Far from simply representing a shameful but essentially humorous cross-dressing episode in Achilles'' life that is destined to be forgotten, the Achilleid can be seen to question the very fabric of epic by probing the validity and authority of its literary tradition, and displaying its highly innovative and experimental nature.

Mona Lisa - Mr Martin (emeritus Professor Of The History Of Art Kemp - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Read this book and the world''s most famous image will never look the same again. For the world''s greatest cultural icon still has secrets to reveal - not the silly secrets that the ''Leonardo loonies'' continue to advance, but previously unknown facts about the lives of Leonardo, his father, Lisa Gherardini, the subject of the portrait, and her husband Francesco del Giocondo. From this factual beginning we see how the painting metamorphosed into a ''universal picture'' that became the prime vehicle for Leonardo''s prodigious knowledge of the human and natural worlds. We learn about the new money of the ambitious merchant who married into the old gentry of Lisa''s family. We discover Lisa''s life as a wife and mother, her association with sexual scandals, and her later life in a convent. We meet, for the first time, previously undiscovered members of Leonardo''s immediate family and discover new information about his early life. The tiny hill town of Vinci is placed before us, with its widespread poverty. We find out about the career and possessions of his father, a notable lawyer in Florence. The meaning of the portrait that resulted from these human circumstances is vividly illuminated though Renaissance love poetry and verses specifically dedicated to Leonardo. We come to understand how Leonardo''s sciences of optics, psychology, anatomy and geology are embraced in his poetic science of art. Recent scientific examinations of the painting disclose how it evolved to assume its present appearance in Leonardo''s experimental hands.Above all, we cut through the suppositions and the myths to show that the portrait is a product of real people in a real place at a real time. This is the book that brings back a sense of reality into the creation of the portrait of Lisa del Giocondo. And the actual Mona Lisa, it turns out, is even more astonishing and transcendent than the Mona Lisa of legend.

The Great God Pan and Other Horror Stories - Arthur Machen - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Charterhouse of Parma - Stendhal - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Charterhouse of Parma - Stendhal - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Charterhouse of Parma (1839) is a compelling novel of passion and daring, of prisons and heroic escape, of political chicanery and sublime personal courage. Set at the beginning of the nineteenth century, amidst the golden landscapes of northern Italy, it traces the joyous but ill-starred amorous exploits of a handsome young aristocrat called Fabrice del Dongo, and of his incomparable aunt Gina, her suitor Prime Minister Mosca, and Clélia, a heroine of ethereal beauty and earthly passion. These characters are rendered unforgettable by Stendhal''s remarkable gift for psychological insight. `Never before have the hearts of princes, ministers, courtiers, and women been depicted like this,'' wrote Honoré de Balzac. `Stendhal''s tableau has the dimensions of a fresco but the precision of the Dutch masters.'' The great achievement of The Charterhouse of Parma is to conjure up the excitement and romance of youth while never losing sight of the harsh realities which beset the pursuit of happiness, nor the humour and patient irony with which these must be viewed. This new translation captures Stendhal''s narrative verve, while the Introduction explores the novel''s reception and the reasons for its enduring popularity and power. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World''s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford''s commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The autos sacramentales of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz - Alice Brooke - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The autos sacramentales of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz - Alice Brooke - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651-1695) was the most significant literary figure of the colonial period in Spanish America. The autos sacramentales, or Eucharistic plays are some of her least studied, and most perplexing works. While one of them, El divino Narciso, has received substantial scholarly attention, the other two, El cetro de José and El mártir del Sacramento, San Hermenegildo, have been critically neglected in Sor Juana studies. This study presents a full-length analysis of all three plays, along with their loas, or the introductory pieces alongside which they were intended to be performed. Furthermore, the study seeks to place these works in their philosophical and cultural context by exploring their engagement both with orthodox Catholic sacramental theology, and the emergence of empiricism and the New Philosophy across the Hispanic world. The three sections of this book each present significant new readings of the three plays. The study of El divino Narciso employs a previously little-known source to illuminate its Christological readings, as well as Sor Juana''s engagement with notions of wit and conceptism. The analysis of El cetro de José explores her presentation of different approaches to perception to emphasise the importance of both the material and the transcendent to a holistic understanding of the Sacraments. The final section, on San Hermenegildo, explores the influence on the play of the Christianised Stoicism of Justus Lipsius, and demonstrates how Sor Juana used the work to attempt her most ambitious reconciliation of an empirical approach to natural philosophy and the material world with a Neostoic approach to Christian morality and orthodox Catholic sacramental theology.

Women Musicians of Venice - Jane L. Baldauf Berdes - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Women Musicians of Venice - Jane L. Baldauf Berdes - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

This book opens a door long closed on an important era in the history of Venice. It presents, for the first time, an introductory, contextual study of three centuries of musical activity at the four major eleemosynary foundations of the former Republic of Venice: the ospedali grandi. It provides a comprehensive account of the institutional, social, religious, and civic dimensions of these welfare complexes, with particular reference to their musical subsidiaries, or cori.Involving over 300 external professional male composers and music teachers and over 800 internal professional women musicians, the history of the cori also incorporates a vast repertory of over 4,000 original works - sacred and secular, vocal and instrumental, solo and choral - little know today but recognized as key elements in the historical evolution of musical genres. Responsible for this phenomenon through their association with the ospedali and the figlie del coro were such figures as Lotti, Legrenzi, Vivaldi, Hasse, Galuppi, and Cimarosa, to name but six. It is their relationship to the ospedali and the concert series in the churches and music salons annexed to them that Dr Berdes explores. In the process she proves the significance of the cori as reflectors of a range of cross-disciplinary scholarship from the history of art and architecture to the history of culture and social policy, as well as medical care and aspects of women''s, children''s, and Venetian studies.Amassing a wealth of information from primary sources, this book constitutes a repository of information and references for a multitude of new investigations. Above all, it will facilitate rediscovery, performance, and analysis of the repertoire commissioned for, and first performed by, the women musicians of the cori, a repertoire of unique richness which may be seen as the mirror of a lost Venetian civilization.
