Arthur Bliss was born in London on 2 August 1891. For over 50 years he was a familiar and central figure on the English musical scene. He was educated at Rugby and at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he studied with Charles Wood. The Call is a ten-movement cantata for solo Soprano with Piano accompaniment, composed in the aftermath of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997. The Call is the first movement of The Call . It is a setting of a poem by George Herbert, and a petition to the various forms of the Trinity to permeate all our lives. It has been arranged here for Soprano solo and Harp. Patrick Hawes (b. 1958) is a contemporary British composer. He has been building a reputation as one of the foremost composers working in the UK today, a position which was cemented when he was appointed as Classic FM’s Composer in Residence for 2006-2007.

Sir Joseph Barnby: O Perfect Love Satb/Organ (Wedding Hymn)

The words of the Wedding Hymn O Perfect Love were written by the English poet Dorothy Frances Gurney (née Blomfield ) (1858-1932) to be used with an earlier melody. Sir Joseph Barnby then wrote a tune specifically for the words in 1890. This was popularised when it was used in 1893 at the wedding of the Duke of York and Princess Mary of Tek, who would later become King George V and Queen Mary. Sir Joseph Barnby (1838-1896) was an English composer and conductor. He was a chorister at York Minster before studying at the RAM. He later became director of Music at Eton and Principal of the Guildhall School of Music.

Verbum Caro Factum Est by Paul Mealor for SATB divisi chorus, 4 trumpets in Eb, timpani, percussion and organ.Verbum Caro Factum Est was commissioned by the University of St Andrews Alumni Club, London for the 600th anniversary of the founding of the University of St Andrews and first performed at St Paul's Cathedral, London on 20 December 2012, in the presence of Her Royal Highness The Princess Alexandra, by St Salvator's Chapel Choir, Thomas Wilkinson (organ) and The State trumpeters of Her Majesty's Life Guards, conducted by Michael Downes. At the first performance of Verbum Caro Factum Est readings were interspersed as indicated in the score. In a concert performance these sections may be used as short organ cadenzas.

LULLABY from The Unicorns (1967/82/86) "The Lullaby from ‘The Unicorns’ arose from an opera libretto I commissioned from John Heath-Stubbs (1918-2006) in the late 1960s. In his story two unicorns are discovered in a remote part of Africa. Both the East and West want to obtain them for research so they send out rival expeditions. The Western technique is to lure the unicorn with a young girl singing a lullaby. Both East and West capture unicorns but the mythical animals escape in the end. I never completed the opera but I made a six movement suite from it called The Unicorns. There are three songs and three instrumental numbers and the first performance was given with Elisabeth Söderström and Solna Brass under Lars-Gunnar Björklund at Ekensbergskyrkan, Solna, Sweden on 31 October 1982. This version was recorded (Albany TROY 760) and my arrangement of the three songs for voice and piano was recorded by Marilyn Hill Smith (Albany TROY365). The career of the Lullaby continued with a version for clarinet and piano, which I premiered with Jack Brymer aboard the Sea Princess in the Mediterranean on 29 September 1986. The oboe version was for Sarah Francis, and Duke Dobing and I have recorded it for flute and piano (Naxos 8.572287). Lullaby can be played with a variety of solo instruments and is also available for piano left hand and piano solo, which I have recorded." -  Peter Dickinson
