We draft a new definition of prosperity and well-being which focuses on the individual’s access to valuable alternatives. From this point of view, the real implications of regulation are traced step by step, following the logic of exchange and the effects on individual actors rather than the economy as a whole.

Avicenna on the Necessity of the Actual: His Interpretation of Four Aristotelian Arguments explains how Avicenna uses these modal claims to show that God is the efficient as well as the final cause of an eternally existing cosmos. From computer support and hotel reservations to laboratory results and radiographic interpretations, it seems everything can be ‘outsourced’ in our globalized world. One would not think so with parenthood, however, especially motherhood, as it is a fundamental activity humans have historically preserved as personal and private. In our modern age, however, the advent and accessibility of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) and the ease with which they have traversed global borders, has fundamentally altered the meaning of childbearing and parenting. In the twenty-first century, parenthood is no longer achieved only through gestation, adoption, or traditional surrogacy, but also via assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), where science and technology play lead roles. Furthermore, in a globalized world economy, where the movement and transfer of people and commodities are increasing to serve the interests of capitalism, gamete donation and surrogate birth can traverse innumerable geographic, socio-economic, racialized, and political borderlands. Thus, reproduction itself can be outsourced. This edited volume explores one specific aspect of the new assisted reproductive technologies: gestational surrogacy and how its practice is changing the traditional concept of parenthood across the globe. The phenomenon of transnational surrogacy has given rise to a thriving international industry where money is being ‘legally’ exchanged for babies and ‘reproductive labor’ has taken on a lucrative commercial tone. Yet, law, research, and activism are barely aware of this experience and are still playing catch-up with rapidly changing on-the-ground realities. This interdisciplinary collection of essays assuages the dearth of knowledge and addresses significant issues in transnational commercial gestational surrogacy as it takes shape in a peculiar relation between the West (primarily the United States) and India.

Antoine Chrysostome Quatremère de Quincy (1755-1849) was the most important Neoclassical art historian in the generation after Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768). It is difficult now to appreciate his importance, due in part to the lack of translations of his 21 published books: three were rendered into English in the 19th century, and one in the 21st. The Moral Considerations has long been considered the most shattering polemic against public museums ever written. But I will show that Quatremère’s polemic was aimed, not against museums per se, but rather against the imperialist and secularist curatorial purposes of Parisian museums in the age of Revolution. His Neoclassical commitments maintained the centrality of religion, and of incarnation, to any proper understanding of the place and purpose of the fine arts.

A Phenomenological Reading of Hosea 12.4-5 and 11.1-2: Commune with Us explores two passages from the Hebrew Bible’s prophetic book containing puzzling plurals in the original language, pieces so enigmatic they are usually changed entirely in translation. Andrew Oberg, however, considers them delightfully confusing, and through in-depth examinations builds a “patchwork” version for each. These reconstructions are then brought to bear on four separate interpretative interactions per pairing, based on alternative pre-comprehensions that the author investigates using phenomenological methods to trace, describe, and wonder on the resulting responses. Finally, Oberg widens the focus of study and presents an approach to engaging with scripture, of whatever faith and lineage, that applies the lessons taken into a technique that could be used by any reader towards a deeper “interrogation” of their literary heritage. Oberg finds that the treasures we have received from tradition still – yet, always – have volumes and volumes to speak.

In Bracketing Paradox and Direct Compositionality: Montagovian Morphology for Bound Morphemes, Kazuhiko Fukushima resolves bracketing paradoxes in Japanese—morphological vs. semantic incongruity, which supposedly pose insurmountable obstacles to traditional and simple-minded morphology—within morphology (the lexicon) proper. This resolution is achieved through formal semantic apparatus developed by Richard Montague and his followers, hence the label Montagovian Morphology. More generally and theoretically, this book addresses the issue of the optimal interface between morphology, which deals with minimal units of meaning and their combination within a word, and semantics, handles increasingly larger units of meaning in the sentence. Fukushima argues that the nature of the interface is directly compositional, requiring no complex syntactic supposition or manipulation other than putting words together as is. The author concludes that a semantically reinforced morphological—that is, lexical—approach is superior to a syntactic one for characterizing the mapping between morphological and semantic domains, and that syntax per se cannot supersede morphology.
