A comprehensive overview of the integrative study of violence Violence continues to be one of the most urgent global public health problems that contemporary society faces. Suicides and homicides are increasing at an alarming rate, particularly in younger age groups and lower-income countries. Historically, the study of violence has been fragmented across disparate fields of study with little cross-disciplinary collaboration, thus creating a roadblock to decoding the underlying processes that give rise to violence and hindering efforts in research and prevention. Violence: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Causes, Consequences, and Cures assembles and organizes current information into one comprehensive volume, introducing students to the multiple sectors, disciplines, and practices that collectively comprise the study of violence. This innovative textbook presents a unified perspective that integrates the sociological, biological, politico-economic, structural, and environmental underpinnings of violence. Each chapter examines a distinct point of learning, beginning with an overview of the content and concluding with discussion questions and an analytical summary. The chapters focus on key domains of research encouraging interdisciplinary investigation and helping students to develop critical analytical skills and form their own conclusions. Fills a significant gap in the field by providing a coherent text that consolidates information on the multiple aspects of violenceExamines current legal, medical, public health, and policy approaches to violence prevention and their application within a global contextIllustrates how similar causes of violence may have dissimilar manifestationsPresents a multidisciplinary examination of the symptoms and underlying processes of violenceOffers a thorough yet accessible learning framework to undergraduate and graduate students without prior knowledge of the study of violence More than just an accumulation of facts and data, this essential text offers a broad introduction to a thinking process that can produce rigorous scholarship across disciplines and lead to a deeper understanding of violence in its many forms.

Sleep and Development - - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The growing multidisciplinary literature on sleep and development needs to be integrated to yield organizing principles and conceptual frameworks researchers can use to defi ne and measure key constructs. This Monograph has three major aims: to present contemporary conceptual and methodological issues that need to be considered to integrate knowledge of sleep and child development across multiple disciplines, and accelerate the pace and enhance the quality of research (Chapter II); to discuss various sleep methodologies including their advantages and disadvantages (Chapter III); and to provide examples of longitudinal studies, which are needed in this developing area of inquiry, that demonstrate linkages between various sleep parameters and child development across multiple domains (Chapters IV through X). Chapter I introduces the main objectives of the volume, highlights the importance of sleep for child development, and presents a guiding framework for understanding the multiple influences on child sleep. Chapter II summarizes the outcomes of an SRCD sponsored forum on sleep and development that included scholars from multiple disciplines and presents guiding recommendations for research priorities. Themes include biobehavioral mechanisms, family processes, and socio-cultural factors; in addition, open questions and best practices in research design and statistics are discussed. Chapter III presents various sleep assessment methodologies including their advantages and disadvantages. Empirical studies (Chapters IV through X) were solicited from researchers in the fi eld; have a longitudinal element in their designs; demonstrate linkages between various sleep parameters and other key developmental domains; and use objective assessments of sleep duration or quality of "typically" developing children. Chapter XI summarizes key aspects of the various studies presented in this monograph and provides directions for this trans-disciplinary area of research.

Raphael - Antonio Forcellino - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Raphael - Antonio Forcellino - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Craving pleasure as well as knowledge, Raphael Sanzio was quick to realize that his talent would only be truly appreciated in the liberal, carefree and extravagantly sensual atmosphere of Rome during its golden age under Julius II and Leo X. Arriving in the city in 1508 at the age of twenty-five, he was entranced and seduced by life at the papal court and within a few months had emerged as the most brilliant star in its intellectual firmament. His art achieved a natural grace that was totally uninhibited and free from subjection. His death, at just thirty-seven, plunged the city into the kind of despair that follows the passing of an esteemed and much loved prince. In this major new biography Antonio Forcellino retraces the meteoric arc of Raphael’s career by re-examining contemporary documents and accounts and interpreting the artist’s works with the eye of an expert art restorer. Raphael’s paintings are vividly described and placed in their historical context. Forcellino analyses Raphael’s techniques for producing the large frescos for which he is so famous, examines his working practices and his organization of what was a new kind of artistic workshop, and shows how his female portraits expressed and conveyed a new attitude to women. This rich and nuanced account casts aside the misconceptions passed on by those critics who persistently tried to undermine Raphael’s mythical status, enabling one of the greatest artists of all time to re-emerge fully as both man and artist.
