Franz Schubert: Sonata (Per Arpeggione) For Flute And Piano

The 'Sonata d'arpeggione' was originally written for the guitarre d'amour or arpeggione - a kind of enlarged guitar that could be bowed cello-style. The instrument did not survive longer than a few years, but this piece by Schubert is a lovely reminder. This edition is transcribed for flute by James Galway and edited by Phillip Moll for the Great Performer's Edition series.The opening Allegro Moderato is built around a wistful melody. A second theme proceeds in gentle gusts of semiquavers (the arpeggione could not play fast notes with much volume at all, and so the Sonata's quicker portions are almost always marked piano or pianissimo). The Adagio is a rich but introverted musing on an almost hymn-like subject, at the end Schubert invites the soloist to improvise a brief transition into the final, multi-sectioned Allegretto.

Robert Muczynski: Sonatina For Piano

Sonatina For Piano (1949) is a work for solo Piano, scored in three movements: Allegro Con Spirito – Andante Con Espressione – Allegro Vivace . It was the first published work of the American composer and pianist Robert Muczynski (1929 - 2010), who also performed it at his Master’s degree recital in 1952. Muczynski composed all his Piano works at the keyboard, with the intention of performing them – he disliked academic analysis of his music and wanted people to just “let it be”. Niles wrote of the moment he first heard the tune: ' A girl had stepped out to the edge of the little platform attached to the automobile. She began to sing. Her clothes were unbelievable dirty and ragged, and she, too, was unwashed. Her ash-blond hair hung down in long skeins.... But, best of all, she was beautiful, and in her untutored way, she could sing. She smiled as she sang, smiled rather sadly, and sang only a single line of a song ". Niles requested that the girl repeat the fragment seven times, paying her a quarter per performance, and left with ' three lines of verse, a garbled fragment of melodic material—and a magnificent idea '. He completed his composition on October 4, 1933 and I Wonder As I Wander was first performed on December 19, 1933, at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina.
