Affirming the Imamate: Early Fatimid Teachings in the Islamic West - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

I.B. Tauris in association with the Institute of Ismaili StudiesThe two sermons edited and translated here for the first time are primary material from the years before the establishment of the Fatimid caliphate in 297/909. The authors have been identified as Abu ‘ Abd Allah al-Shi '' i and Abu’l- ‘ Abbas Muhammad, two brothers who were central to the success of the Ismaili da'' wa in North Africa. Da''wa , a term used to describe how Muslims teach others about the beliefs and practices of their Islamic faith, therefore provide a unique view of the nature and development of Islam throughout history. In this case, the primary texts shed light on the development of Islam among the Berbers of the Maghreb. The first text by Abu ‘ Abd Allah al-Shi '' i shows how the arguments for belief in the ''imamate'' of the family of the Prophet, that is, the Shi''a belief that all imams should be spiritual descendants of the Prophet Muhammad and his household, were developed and presented to bring new adherents to the cause. The Book of the Keys to Grace by his elder brother Abu’l- ‘ Abbas, too, concerns not only the centrality of the imam in the faith but also sheds light on the hierarchy of the da ’ wa in this early period and its organisational sophistication. Both texts also reveal the contemporary theology propagated by the Ismaili da ’ wa , including for instance, the powerful analogy of Moses/Aaron and Muhammad/ ’ Ali, the awareness of a variety of religious traditions and the use of detailed Qur’anic quotations and a wide range of hadith. As such they constitute primary source material of interest not only for Ismaili history but for this early period of Islam in general.

Lemon - Kwon Yeo Sun - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Lemon - Kwon Yeo Sun - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This is not a murder story. It is the story of those left behind. Parasite meets The Good Son in this piercing psychological portrait of three women haunted by a brutal, unsolved crime. In the summer of 2002, Kim Hae-on was killed in what became known as the High School Beauty Murder. There were two suspects: Shin Jeongjun, who had a rock-solid alibi, and Han Manu, to whom no evidence could be pinned. The case went cold.Seventeen years pass without justice, and the grief and uncertainty take a cruel toll on her younger sister, Da-on, in particular. Unable to move on with her life, Da-on tries in her own twisted way to recover some of what she''s lost, ultimately setting out to find the truth of what happened.Shifting between the perspectives of Da-on and two of Hae-on''s classmates, Lemon ostensibly takes the shape of a crime novel. But identifying the perpetrator is not the main objective here: Kwon Yeo-sun uses this well-worn form to craft a searing, timely exploration of privilege, jealousy, trauma, and how we live with the wrongs we have endured and inflicted in turn. Praise for Lemon : ''Discovering whodunnit isn''t really the point here; Lemon is a subtle, often intense meditation on the after-effects of violence'' Guardian ''Chilling, suspenseful and disconcerting... I couldn''t put it down and read deep into the night until I finished it, with my heart hammering'' Frances Cha, author of If I Had Your Face

The Light of Italy - Jane Stevenson - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

The story of the Renaissance city and palace of Urbino, and the life of the extraordinary man who created it: Federico da Montefeltro. ''Painstakingly researched and yet unfailingly readable'' Ross King ''An insight into one of Renaissance Italy''s most glamorous courts'' Catherine Fletcher ''The perfect tour guide to the past'' Literary Review ''A fabulous merging of seductive design with bravura scholarship'' Alexandra Harris ''A superior study... Packed with detail'' TLS The one-eyed mercenary soldier Federico da Montefeltro, lord of Urbino between 1444 and 1482, was one of the most successful condottiere of the Italian Renaissance: renowned humanist, patron of the artist Piero della Francesca, and creator of one of the most celebrated libraries in Italy outside the Vatican. From 1460 until her early death in 1472 he was married to Battista, of the formidable Sforza family, their partnership apparently blissful. In the fine palace he built overlooking Urbino, Federico assembled a court regarded by many as representing a high point of Renaissance culture. For Baldassare Castiglione, Federico was la luce dell''Italia – ''the light of Italy''.Jane Stevenson''s affectionate account of Urbino''s flowering and decline casts revelatory light on patronage, politics and humanism in fifteenth-century Italy. As well as recounting the gripping stories of Federico and his Montefeltro and della Rovere successors, Stevenson considers in details Federico''s cultural legacy – investigating the palace itself, the splendours of the ducal library, and his other architectural projects in Gubbio and elsewhere.

The Sun Hasn't Fallen From the Sky - Alison Gangel - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

‘Touching and funny, Alison Gangel''s memoir is an exceptionally honest and brave piece of writing.'' Anne Donovan ''A gleaming gem of a memoir'' Daily Express ________________________ Seven-year-old Ailsa Dunn''s Ma is prettier than all the other mothers, her Da is the most handsome man in the world. They''re made for each other... But the grown-up world is more complicated than that, and when alcohol intrudes, violence becomes the norm and unpredictability reigns - and the ground shifts beneath Ailsa''s small feet.Ailsa and her big sister Morag - both Ailsa''s cruellest tormentor and her staunchest defender - are removed from the care of their adored parents and enrolled at McGregor''s Orphan Homes, a world away from their Wallace Street tenement. Here, the rules are strict: there are chores, there are curfews, the ever-present threat of Auntie Vera and bitter resignation as visits from Ma and Da become fewer and further between. But there''s also fish and chips, a holiday by the sea, a pillowcase full of toys at Christmas and, life-changing for Ailsa, an inspirational teacher and the chance discovery of a rare musical talent that will give her the opportunity to take her future into own hands. The Sun Hasn''t Fallen From the Sky is a vibrant portrait of two sisters growing up together in 1970s Glasgow as their family falls apart; a tender childhood memoir both heartbreaking and uplifting.
